The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) has coordination and clinical skills required for the comprehensive management of critical care medicine patients, (including biological, social and psychological assessments). They will possess specialized skills in the care of critically ill and injured patients and families undergoing operative and other invasive procedures. The APP coordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teams necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient and reviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinical team, participates in directing that care. The provider will work with the team to ensure adherence to protocol requirements and regulatory guidelines. They will perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, peri-procedural services, and coordinates discharge planning to next level of care (as applicable). The APP may participate in the education of residents and medical/nursing students.
Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the professional licensing or certification authority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Such service may include, but are not limited to. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR NURSE PRACTITIONER: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master's Degree in Nursing. 2. National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers. 3. Licensure or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia. EXPERIENCE: 1. BLS certification required 2. 2 Years acute care experience required MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Bachelor's Degree as a Medical/Surgical (as applicable) Physician Assistant required. 2. Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) training program required. 3. Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required. 4. Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine. 5. BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department. EXPERIENCE: 1. 2 Years acute care experience required PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Masters level education as Medical/Surgical (as applicable) Advanced Practice Professional preferred. EXPERIENCE: 1. Acute care, critical care experience preferred. CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. Manages comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families in the Inpatient/Critical care phase of hospitalization 2. Withthe collaboration of Critical Care or by following established protocol, orders additional tests or consults to complete the preoperative and/or pre-procedure workup. 3. Performs, interprets and communicates results of common diagnostic tests. 4. Consults and communicates with Critical Care and surgical services regarding abnormal findings in the evaluations of patients. 5. Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for patients that include teaching, discharge planning and necessary referral to other members of the health care team. 6. Participates in physician/team rounds. 7. Identifies unstable or complex patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention with appropriate resources. 8. Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care. 9. Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation and management of the individual needs of patients/families. 10. Demonstrates the ability to utilize basic equipment in a safe manner. 11. Facilitates patient discharge/transfer by coordination of appropriate services. 12. Bases decisions made/actions taken on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care and/or research findings. 13. Promotes an environment that facilitates learning by responding to appropriate patient/family preferences, priorities and readiness to learn. 14. Updates own knowledge base throughout the year. 15. Completes all identified clinical competencies. 16. Mentors nursing personnel in all levels of clinical practice. 17. Communicates effectively with patients/families, physicians and ancillary services at all levels to assure coordinated efficient patient care. 18. Documents the plan of care, interventions and evaluations in a clear and concise manner. 19. Adheres to the established Performance Expectations for WVU-UHA Employees in the areas of People, Service, Performance Improvement, and Shared Values & Culture. 20. Performs initial assessment and develops plan for new admissions in conjunction with the critical care attending physician 21. Ensures patient summary (i.e. Problem List) and orders are current 22. Ensures appropriate transition to next team when patient is ready to leave the ICU 23. Performs appropriate procedures as directed by Critical Care Team and within scope of practice.
