Job Summary

Performs role of Surgical Technologist, with specialty training for Neuro, CVOR, Ophthalmology, Difficult Airway, or Transplant being utilized on a daily basis in an inpatient setting. Staff will take specialty call for these teams as per their specialty experience. Teams who take specialty call separately (e.g., Ophthalmology call from Cross Creek) will utilize this role for their call hours only as a Job 2.

Duties as Surgical Technologist include but not limited to: coordinating instrumentation and sterile field needs for the procedure, preparing the surgical field/back table, assisting surgeon at the field during procedure, assisting other operating room staff as needed. The position requires working within the standards and guidelines of multiple industry agencies (including, but not limiting to TJC, AAMI, AST, FDA, CDC).

Must be able to take call, including weekends.

Essential Functions

  • Prepares the Operating Room for cases by opening sterile supplies, setting up the back table, and arranging instruments and supplies according to type of case and surgeon's preference card. Provides technical assistance with preparation of patient and any specialty equipment.

  • Assists the surgical team during the operative procedure. Assists in maintaining correct surgical counts, identifies and cares for specimens, handles drugs and solutions under direction of the RN.

  • Maintains sterile field during surgical procedures. Adheres to accepted standards for provision of safe patient care in the surgical environment. Complies with policies addressing safe working conditions; reports unsafe working conditions.

  • Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and terminally cleans at the end of the day. Returns unused supplies and instruments and extra equipment to proper storage.

  • Models Prisma Health behavior expectations. Assists with coaching, mentoring and training coworkers as assigned. Trains and assists with integration of new team members. Shares knowledge, ideas, and expertise to support the team and the department.

  • Maintains all responsibilities and performs all duties included in specialty team assignment, including separate call schedule and ongoing education as applicable.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Successful completion of a Surgical Technology program or Surgical Technologist training in the U.S. Armed Forces.

  • Experience - No previous experience required.

In Lieu Of

  • In lieu of the education requirement only, must be current with mandatory 15 hours annually of ST continuing education AND either have been employed as a ST in S.C. prior to Jan. 1, 2008, OR have completed a ST military training program.

  • Team members employed in this job prior to July 1, 2020, without surgical tech certification that are grandfathered under South Carolina law are not required to obtain certification but are required to complete 15 hours annually of continuing ST education.

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • CST - Surgical Technologist Certification with NBSTSA or NCCT certification accepted if ST was employed as a ST in S.C. prior to January 1, 2008, or completed a ST military training program.

  • Maintains surgical technology certification - Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to complete 15 hours of mandatory ST education annuallyrequired.

  • For CVOR: Ability to setup and scrub new technology procedures such as TAVR, LVAD, Impella, Ablation, Transmyocardio Laser, Assist Devices and Endovascular cases. Must have knowledge and understanding of the Heart Lung Machine and its function with the cardiovascular system in regards to cannulation of the patient.
