Summary of Position
This individual will initially support NASA's Geostationary Littoral Imaging and Monitoring Radiometer ( GLIMR) investigation. GLIMR is a $108M UNH-led ocean color mission to be launched in 2027. GLIMR will study phytoplankton physiology and other coastal ocean processes and its on-orbit instrument operations will be conducted from UNH. The project is expected to continue through 2029. The mission has recently passed confirmation and has entered the implementation phase. There are expected to be additional future project opportunities at UNH after GLIMR concludes.
We seek an individual with a broad interest in understanding coastal biological processes from space, who also possesses the technical skills required to design and lead the science operations with inputs from a science team. The Science Operations Manager requires strong communication and technical skills to lead operations for the NASA GLIMR mission. The Science Operations Manager: has excellent technical knowledge within science and mission operations; is able to plan, direct and monitor all aspects of the science operations; possesses strong drive, motivation and self-initiative; is responsible for acting independently on science and mission operations matters within the area of expertise; communicates, coordinates, and implements project requirements with the project team and consultants; reports to the Principal Investigator(s); and must have experience in development efforts for science and mission operations under NASA space science projects. Project is local to Durham, NH with opportunities for some remote work.

Other minimum qualifications

  1. PhD in appropriate field of Engineering or Physics or a closely related scientific or technical field and three years of related engineering or project management experience; or Master's and eight years of related experience; or Bachelor's degree and ten years of related experience, or a combination of directly related higher education and experience equal to fifteen years.
  2. Advanced expertise in the design of ground system equipment.
  3. Advanced expertise in computer programming and computational design
  4. Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  5. Knowledge of and experience with the engineering design and development process for federally sponsored science or technology programs. Experience with NASA-funded spaceflight hardware programs is most applicable.
  6. Familiarity with Linux, Jira, GSEOS, STOL

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  1. Programming expertise in Python, Matlab or similar.
  2. Experience with LEON test platforms
  3. Experience with radiometric analysis
  4. Experience with Satellite Tool Kit
  5. Experience with requirements development and verification

Duty/Responsibility
Manages, communicates, and coordinates science and mission operations requirements with the project team and subcontractors; Train and supervise trainees, including students, in data systems and science and mission operations. Students will be used to help with mission operations;
Lead Mission Operations Readiness Review with stakeholders


Duty/Responsibility
Specify, design, and implement the software for the Ground Support Equipment ( GSE) and simulators required to test, operate, monitor, and command scientific instrumentation for spaceflight projects; Maintain a high degree of knowledge of specialized data systems and ground systems equipment used in instrument and spacecraft applications; Provide software design support to team members; Participate in the analysis and troubleshooting of instrument or ground system issues


Duty/Responsibility
Oversee, direct, and manage tests of ground software and review, edit, or prepare test procedures and reports as necessary; Oversee, direct and manage simulations needed for data systems on NASA projects; Maintain a high proficiency with data analysis tools, visualization tools and methods

Observe and participate in instrument testing on-site in CA; Observe and participate in host integration activities at host facility (location TBD); Run host-integration tests with the science operations team

Conduct trade studies relating to specification and selection of components for data systems.
Provide input to research proposals and cost estimates as required.
