Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Student Assistant within Central Laboratory Services at the Rutgers Cancer Institute.
Under the direction of the Director of Facilities Administration and the Supervising Laboratory Technician, the Student Assistant performs a variety of general laboratory services, sanitation procedures, and maintenance duties to ensure smooth daily operations across research facilities. This role is primarily responsible for assisting with the decontamination, sterilization, and proper handling of laboratory glassware and equipment, while also providing flexible operational support. Additional responsibilities include receiving and stocking supplies, assisting with basic reagent/solution preparation, and helping maintain a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment to support ongoing research initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Assists with cleaning, decontaminating, and sterilizing laboratory glassware and equipment using manual techniques and automated machinery (e.g., commercial dishwashers, autoclaves).
- Inspects glassware and lab equipment for chips, cracks, or contamination; properly reports or disposes of damaged items according to established safety protocols.
- Organizes, stores, and distributes clean glassware to designated laboratory areas. Monitors inventory levels of cleaning agents, lab supplies, and consumables, assisting with restocking as needed.
- Assists with receiving, unpacking, and organizing incoming laboratory shipments and supplies. Verifies delivered contents against packing slips and stores items in proper locations.
- Assists lab personnel with basic operational tasks, such as preparing stock solutions/buffers, maintaining equipment storage, and ensuring workstations are clean and prepared for research activities.
- Assists in the distribution and restocking of liquid nitrogen (LN2) tanks and smaller gas cylinders for research laboratories.
- Assists with coordination and distributing of dry ice to supported research laboratories and maintain appropriate stock levels.
- Restocks tissue culture rooms with CLS-provided supplies, including disinfectants such as alcohol and bleach plus paper towels, surgical masks, and other routinely provided laboratory supplies.
- Assists with laboratory decommissioning when investigators vacate laboratory space, including removal of unwanted or discarded items, decontamination of bench spaces, and other tasks necessary to prepare the laboratory for reassignment.
- Performs routine checks of shared laboratory support areas to identify supply shortages, housekeeping concerns, or other issues requiring CLS attention.

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
- Must be a current Rutgers undergraduate or graduate student.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.

- Ability to follow detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines.
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is also essential.
- Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

| Physical Demands and Work Environment |
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing for extended periods, walking, sitting, talking, and hearing. Manual dexterity to safely handle fragile glassware. Ability to lift and move supplies or equipment weighing up to 35-50 lbs. 1. The employee must be able to safely lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Laboratory work environment, with moderate noise. Exposure to biological specimens (cells, blood, tissues etc.) with possible exposure to infectious diseases, exposure to hazardous chemicals including therapeutic drugs. Laboratory environment operates under mandatory universal safety precaution.
