Position

SLSCO Ltd. Federal Services Division is seeking a Field Safety Specialist for a federal design-build infrastructure project in the Laredo, Texas area. The Specialist supports the project Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) and field leadership by identifying hazards, assisting with inspections and training, tracking corrective actions, and maintaining safety records. This is a field-based role suited to a practical safety professional who communicates well with crews and follows issues through to resolution.

Responsibilities

• Support implementation of the government-accepted Accident Prevention Plan (APP), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), and applicable project safety requirements under the direction of the SSHO. Maintain a regular presence in active work areas.
• Report to the project SSHO and work closely with field supervision, subcontractors, and the project team. Escalate significant hazards and unresolved deficiencies promptly to the SSHO and responsible supervisor.
• Participate in pre-work, preparatory, coordination, and safety meetings as assigned; communicate upcoming hazards and needed controls.
• Observe subcontractor work for conformance with approved AHAs, project procedures, and required controls; document findings and follow up with supervision.
• Assist the SSHO with site orientations, toolbox talks, and task-specific training; maintain attendance and training records. Deliver training when qualified and authorized.
• Apply relevant construction safety requirements, including EM 385-1-1 and OSHA standards, in daily field observations and raise compliance concerns to the SSHO.
• Help gather facts, photographs, statements, and records for incident and near-miss investigations led by the SSHO; assist with reports and corrective-action follow-up.
• Enter observations and deficiencies into the project tracking system, monitor assigned corrective actions, and verify and document closure with the SSHO.
• Conduct and document routine field inspections; engage crews and supervisors to address hazards promptly. Stop or pause an activity when an imminent danger is observed and notify the SSHO and field supervision.
• Assist supervisors and the SSHO with preparing or reviewing AHAs and confirming that crews understand the controls before work begins.
• Maintain safety files, inspection records, training logs, required postings, and reference materials as assigned.
• Support coordination among field safety personnel and subcontractor safety representatives as assigned by the SSHO.
• Perform other project safety duties assigned by the SSHO or project leadership within the scope of the role.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of construction field safety experience; heavy civil or infrastructure experience preferred.
• Experience supporting safety on federal construction projects preferred; prior SSHO designation is not required.
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety training required; EM 385-1-1 training preferred.
• Working knowledge of EM 385-1-1 and applicable OSHA construction requirements, with the ability to recognize hazards and communicate practical controls.
• Experience with AHAs, inspections, corrective-action tracking, and common construction hazards such as excavation, mobile equipment, lifting, and work at height.
• Heavy-civil, roadway, utility, border infrastructure, or other large linear construction experience strongly preferred
• Ability to work full-time onsite and travel throughout active work areas.
• Strong verbal/written communication is required.
• Ability to speak, read, and write English sufficiently to communicate safety requirements and maintain records; U.S. citizenship if required by the contract or site access rules.
• Ability to successfully pass background/security checks, valid State Driver's License
• Proficiency in MS Office products.

Physical Demands

• Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity.
• Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting and standing, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands.
• Occasional lifting (up to 40 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying.
• Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, standard measurements).
• Ability to work outside in and around construction sites safely.
