Senior Director of Port Transportation & Fleet Operations

Salary Range: $152,501-$267,935

The Senior Director of Port Transportation & Fleet Operations is responsible for overall leadership, financial performance, operation execution, customer relationships, and business growth for company-owned transportation operations supporting freight movement from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The role oversees a fleet and workforce of approximately 50 company drivers, and will oversee fleet operations, driver workforce management, customer account development, port and terminal relationships, profitability, and business expansion initiatives.

Provide overall leadership of transportation operations, dispatch, driver utilization, equipment availability, routing, scheduling, and customer service execution
• Oversee daily freight movement to ensure timely pickup and delivery from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach
• Coordinate fleet maintenance activities and equipment availability to minimize operational downtime.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable DOT, FMCSA, California, port, terminal, and company regulations and requirements.
• Develop and maintain relationships with steamship lines, marine terminals, port operations, chassis providers, and transportation partners.
• Develop relationships with importers, exporters, beneficial cargo owners (BCOs), freight forwarders, NVOCCs, and 3PLs to drive profitable growth.
• Monitor terminal operations, congestion, appointments, chassis availability, and other factors impacting performance.
• Oversee driver staffing, scheduling, training, performance management, and retention initiatives
• Manage customer relationships and serve as senior escalation point for service and operational issues.
• Develop and manage operation budgets, forecasts, pricing strategies, and financial targets.
• Develop and implement strategies to improve terminal turn times and reduce detention, empty miles, driver wait time, and other avoidable operating costs.
• Analyze profitability by customer, lane, service offering, and equipment type and implement improvement plans.
• Establish and monitor KPIs for safety, productivity, utilization, service performance, revenue growth, and profitability
• Lead start-up, transition, and stabilization activities for transportation operations.
• Develop and execute business development and account maintenance strategies to secure new customers and expand existing accounts.
• Generate proposals, pricing models, and transportation solutions aligned with customer requirements and profitability goals.
• Partner with Finance to ensure billing accuracy, collections performance, and recovery of detention, demurrage, and other accessorial revenues.
• Lead, coach, and develop transportation management, dispatch, and driver personnel while promoting a culture of accountability, safety, and operational excellence.
• Work collaboratively with finance, sales, human resources, safety, maintenance, and other corporate functions.
• Provide regular operational and financial reporting to senior management.

• Bachelor's Degree preferred plus seven or more years' related experience in transportation, trucking, port drayage, logistics, operations management, or related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience managing transportation operations and frontline personnel.
• Experience managing fleets, drivers, and dispatch functions.
• Port drayage experience, preferably within the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
• Strong understanding of transportation financials, pricing, and profitability.
• Customer account management experience.
• Business development and sales experience.
• Proficiency with transportation management systems (TMS), Microsoft Excel, and reporting tools.
• Strong communication, leadership, and negotiation skills.
