Position description

The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for an approved faculty position at either the non-tenured (tenure-track) Assistant Professor level or the tenured Associate Professor level in the area of Electronic, Functional, and Quantum Materials. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience. This appointment will be a joint 50% Materials Science and Engineering / 50% Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences appointment.

The EECS Department has several related faculty positions open or opening soon. Please visit our EECS Faculty Positions webpage to view these listings. To be considered for multiple positions, please submit a separate application for each one.

About the Departments:

The MSE department is part of the College of Engineering (COE) and maintains close ties with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). It advances the understanding and design of materials through an interdisciplinary blend of chemistry, physics, and engineering, pairing rigorous fundamentals with modern, application-driven approaches. Our key strength is our collaborative, cross-disciplinary research community, with abundant opportunities for students and collaborators across campus and beyond.

The EECS department is part of the College of Engineering (COE) and the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS). It offers one of the strongest research and instructional programs in this field anywhere in the world. Our key strength is our array of cross-disciplinary, team-driven projects. The integration of EE and CS forms the core, with strong interactions that extend into many other disciplines.

About the Position:

We seek applicants interested in the science and engineering of electronic and functional materials, from fundamental discovery through synthesis, characterization, and integration into device platforms. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, wide-bandgap and ultrawide-bandgap semiconductors; materials for energy-efficient microelectronics and low-power AI hardware, including materials for neuromorphic and in-memory computing; ferroelectric, multiferroic, and magnetic materials for logic and memory; photonic and optoelectronic materials; quantum materials; and heterogeneous integration and advanced processing of emerging materials with established device platforms. All areas within Electronic, Functional, and Quantum Materials are of interest, and candidates across this breadth are encouraged to apply.
