Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $80,400 to $92,000/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $67,700 to $118,500/year.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under general supervision of the Associate Director of Custodial and Landscape Services, the Custodial Supervisor is part of the custodial supervisory team that is responsible for all aspects of the department's around-the-clock custodial services program involving from 100+ custodial working staff. The Custodial Supervisor has full management responsibility for achievement of operational, personnel, and customer satisfaction objectives for all staff on their assigned shift.

Required Qualifications:

  • Required or equivalent certification High School Diploma
  • 4-6 years Advanced knowledge in custodial and housekeeping services Required
  • Ability to evaluate employee performance and participate in the progressive discipline of staff
  • Ability to assign work orders to appropriate crew leaders and delegate responsibilities according to operational needs
  • Ability to respond to complaints and requests form clients
  • Ability to meet with clients regularly to review service delivery and clients' concerns
  • Ability to keep clients informed with respect to changes in staffing and service delivery
  • Ability to report job related injuries and illnesses according to established procedures
  • Ability to develop and monitor modified assignments for injured or ill employees
  • Ability to ensure that employees submit proper medical documentation when ill or injured
  • Ability to counsel employees concerning performance and other problems, and to document problems and counseling sessions
  • Communication skills to keep supervisor informed of problems, recommend disciplinary action, and help manage discipline cases
  • Ability to maintain scheduling within prescribed budgetary guidelines and submit payroll information for all employees
  • Ability to report time worked on jobs on-line and approve and schedule vacation leave for subordinates
  • Ability to collect data, fill-in for subordinates in their absence, and perform other duties as needed
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct routine custodial operations and ensure that work is done on time and to standards
  • Ability to work with crew leaders to resolve service-delivery problems
  • Ability to participate in Quality Assurance Program by performing inspections according to set schedule, train and supervise the custodial staff to maintain an orderly, safe, and efficient cleaning operation, ensure that employees are trained with respect to custodial methods such that only authorized equipment and products are used and used properly, and ensure that employees observe safe work practices
  • Ability to ensure that safety training is conducted monthly and submit training reports to supervisor and Facilities Services safety officer
  • Requires knowledge in the care and use of power equipment and has the ability to test new equipment and products
  • Ability to enforce safety, hazardous materials, and custodial policies and procedures are adhered to, maintain file of Material Safety Data Sheets, and report safety hazards and vandalism
  • Ability to request services from other Facilities Services units via the web server
  • Ability to enforce biohazardous materials, equipment, and clean room policies and procedures and enforce proper handling and mixture of chemicals
  • Bloodborne pathogens and sharps disposal training.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years Supervisor or Lead experience Preferred
  • 1-3 years Intermediate computer skills with the ability to learn new programs and hardware Preferred

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • May be required to work extended hours, weekends, and/or alternate shifts, to meet the operational needs of the department.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 55% Management & Leadership - Oversees the work of team leads and workers on assigned shift. Communicates effectively to workers and team leads, addresses and resolves concerns promptly, and evaluates performance of team leads and workers in performance management process including written annual performance evaluations. Informally resolves personnel disputes and takes appropriate disciplinary actions when required. Maintains attendance records and assures staff attendance and productivity meets department requirements. Supports, coaches, and provides strategic service guidance to team leads in the accomplishment of department objectives of team performance, high worker morale, safety, productivity and quality of work. Ensures team leads develop and implement appropriate, regular inspections of all work performed in the unit.
  • 30% Customer Satisfaction - Meets and communicates regularly with internal and external customers to seek feedback regarding quality of service and work performed by teams. Develops and implements effective, measurable methods of obtaining regular, systematic customer feedback. Provides all customer feedback to team lead promptly. Assists team leads in achieving customer needs.
  • 15% Supplies & Equipment - Maintains appropriate inventory, records, reports, and distribution plans for all supplies, materials and equipment used by each team. Assures team leads maintain appropriate levels of supplies. Tracks and reports regularly costs of supplies, materials and equipment utilized by teams. Assists team lead in security and distribution of all supplies, materials and equipment at team level. Meets with vendors and suppliers to assure best pricing and availability of required materials. Develops and implements plan for repair of equipment as required.
