As a Tunnel Maintainer with the Department of Transportation, you will help keep tunnels and roadways operating safely and smoothly. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This role focuses on maintaining tunnel facilities, supporting traffic flow, and assisting with incident response to ensure safe travel. It involves hands-on maintenance work, communication with responders, and operation of equipment during both routine and emergency situations. As a Tunnel Maintainer, you will perform the following duties:
- Incident Response: Assist motorists and First Responders by clearing debris, controlling traffic, and helping restore normal conditions
- Facility Maintenance: Clean tunnel areas, maintain drainage systems, repair structural components, and keep grounds free of debris
- Condition Monitoring: Observe tunnel operations and identify issues related to traffic flow, air quality, or equipment needs
- HOV Lane Support: Perform patrols, help disabled motorists, and operate gates during opening and closing procedures
- Equipment Operation: Operate trucks and machinery for snow removal, towing tasks, and tunnel washing activities
- Safety Practices: Use proper safety procedures, identify hazards, and maintain awareness of environmental and operational risks
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Seasonal full-time employment
- Work hours are varied and are based upon operational considerations. Shifts can range from the following:
- 9:30 PM to 5:30 AM
- 5:30 AM to 1:30 PM
- 1:30 PM to 9:30 PM
- Travel, overtime, and shift work required.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
- All employees must demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
- All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on their first day of employment.
- All employees must obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.
- All positions in this job require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment during the probationary period.
