Job Description

PURPOSE:

In addition to performing standard shell operator duties, the Shell Room Lead is responsible for directing daily operations within the assigned work area, guiding team members, and ensuring execution of the production plan. This role operates with limited supervision and is accountable for maintaining workflow, enforcing process discipline, and meeting daily department commit targets. Daily and weekly priorities are established by the supervisor, with the Lead responsible for executing and adjusting those priorities in real time to maintain safe, efficient, and consistent production.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Execute and adjust daily production priorities to meet department commit targets (throughput, ESH, productivity).
  • Prioritize and assign work across all shell operations, including Prime, Backup, Robots (R1/R3), Drybox, and Debase flow.
  • Effectively utilize personnel based on skill level to maintain consistent production flow and minimize bottlenecks.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all process control procedures, work instructions, and WIP movement requirements.
  • Monitor and manage workflow in real time to maintain proper dip cycles, dry times, and downstream flow to Dewax.
  • Lead and support robotic operations (R1/R3), including basic troubleshooting, alarm response, and maximizing utilization.
  • Enforce coating quality standards and ensure defects are prevented through proper technique and process discipline.
  • Identify, communicate, and resolve issues impacting safety, quality, or productivity in a timely manner.
  • Provide hands-on support to operators to maintain pace, correct issues, and ensure process compliance.
  • Ensure all employees have proper PPE, tooling, materials, and work instructions to perform their jobs safely and effectively.
  • Train and reinforce safe work practices; identify and escalate unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Maintain and enforce 6S standards to ensure a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.
  • Support scrap and rework reduction through continuous improvement and adherence to standard work.
  • Assist in training and development of employees through structured OJT and process coaching.
  • Ensure effective shift handoff communication, including job status, equipment condition, and production risks.
  • Coordinate with adjacent departments to ensure alignment and support overall plant production goals.
  • Support cost control initiatives by minimizing material waste and properly managing supplies.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support department operations.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • General knowledge of company policies and procedures and their application to cases not previously covered.
  • Duties require considerable judgment and the ability to work independently toward results.
  • Makes related decisions guided by precedent and within limits of established policies.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (8-12 hours per shift) on industrial surfaces.
  • Frequently lifts and carries up to 35 lbs; heavier items require assistance.
  • Repetitive use of hands and arms to grip, handle, and maneuver molds and equipment, often in wet or coated conditions.
  • Continuous upper body movement, including handling molds, operating equipment, and performing cleaning tasks.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching, including work at or above shoulder height.
  • Requires strong visual acuity to identify coating defects and monitor process conditions.
  • Ability to work in an industrial environment with exposure to chemicals, temperature variation, noise, and wet/slippery surfaces.
  • Regular work around moving machinery, robotic equipment, and powered industrial trucks.
  • Must wear always required personal protective equipment (PPE).

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports directly to the 1st shift Department Supervisor.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, safety standards, and quality systems.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead by example and foster teamwork and accountability.
