Introduction

The Department of Community Corrections is seeking qualified and motivated applicants to join our innovative Probation Division as a full-time Probation Officer. Job Summary

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and have a balanced approach to working with the offender population, utilizing facets of both social work and law enforcement.

Duties include supervising defendants, submitting reports, and testifying in Court. Candidate must be able to multitask in a fastpaced, high volume, dynamic case management environment. This position establishes and monitors community service work for program participants, administers drug tests, and assures that all special conditions of the Court are fulfilled. This position requires regular attendance at court proceedings, maintaining accurate automated PSLP case management notes and case files, and performing substance abuse assessments and referrals. This position supervises offenders sentenced in the Circuit and General District Courts.

Hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.


Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, or related field, and a minimum of two (2) years related experience in the criminal justice field.


Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

The successful candidate must undergo and complete a criminal background check. An annual DMV record check will be required.

Must be willing to supervise probationers in an office setting and perform occasional home visits. Must be willing to work with criminal offenders, some of whom have violent histories. Prefer that the candidate have experience working with criminally-involved substance abusing individuals and/or strong background/knowledge/education in substance abuse, addiction, mental health and appropriate services/ treatments. Collection of samples for urinalysis and administration of alcohol breath tests is also required. Must have strong writing skills and be able to compile facts and information into concise reports for submission to the Court. The candidate will have strong communication skills to interact with representatives from the legal community such as Commonwealth's Attorneys, law enforcement, defense attorneys, and court personnel. The candidate will work as part of a team within the Community Corrections Department. VCIN certification is required; the selected candidate will obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
