Texas Science & Natural History Museum is developing new exhibits, programs, and experiences that spark curiosity, promote belonging, and tell stories about Texas science and natural history.

Purpose

The Digital Marketing Specialist supports Texas Science & Natural History Museum's marketing and communications efforts through the creation, management, and execution of digital marketing initiatives. This position develops engaging content, manages social media channels, designs promotional materials, captures photo and video content, and supports digital campaigns that advance the museum's visibility, attendance, membership, educational programs, and community engagement.

The ideal candidate is a creative storyteller with strong design skills, experience creating content for digital platforms, and the ability to produce compelling visual content that brings the museum's exhibitions, collections, programs, and events to life.

Responsibilities

Social Media Strategy and Management

  • Develop and implement social media strategies that support museum priorities, exhibitions, events, educational programs, membership initiatives, and special campaigns.

  • Create, schedule, publish, and manage content across the museum's social media platforms.

  • Monitor audience engagement, respond to comments and messages, and foster meaningful interactions with visitors and followers.

  • Track trends and identify opportunities to grow audiences, increase engagement, and expand reach.

  • Maintain the social media content calendar in coordination with museum staff and stakeholders.

  • Analyze platform performance and prepare regular reports with insights and recommendations.

Digital Content Creation and Design

  • Create and design digital marketing assets using Canva and other design tools, including social media graphics, digital advertisements, email graphics, web content, and event promotions.

  • Develop creative content and campaigns that support exhibitions, public programs, membership initiatives, educational offerings, fundraising efforts, and institutional priorities.

  • Capture and edit photography and short-form video content featuring exhibitions, collections, visitors, staff, programs, and special events.

  • Produce engaging visual storytelling content for social media, digital advertising, websites, and email marketing.

  • Ensure consistency with museum branding standards, messaging, and accessibility best practices.

  • Maintain and organize digital media assets for future use.

Digital Marketing and Communications Support

  • Support the planning and execution of digital marketing campaigns designed to increase attendance, membership, engagement, and awareness.

  • Assist with website updates and digital promotions as needed.

  • Collaborate with museum staff to promote exhibitions, events, educational programs, memberships, fundraising initiatives, and other institutional priorities.

  • Identify and develop storytelling opportunities that highlight the museum's mission, collections, educational impact, and visitor experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, graphic design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Experience managing social media accounts for an organization, brand, nonprofit, museum, educational institution, or similar entity.

  • Experience designing digital graphics and marketing materials.

  • Experience capturing and editing photography and video content for digital marketing purposes.

  • Familiarity with social media management tools and digital advertising platforms.

  • Strong writing, editing, organizational, and project management skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in museums, cultural institutions, higher education, nonprofits, or visitor-serving organizations.

  • Experience with Meta advertising and social media analytics.

  • Knowledge of digital marketing best practices, audience development, and content strategy.

  • Experience with website content management systems.

  • Passion for science, natural history, education, or public engagement.

Salary: $41,250 ($55,000 annual prorated for 30 hours per week)

Work Shift

  • Approximately 30 hours per week.

  • Flexible schedule with some evening and weekend hours required to support museum events and programs.

  • Position primarily remote but requires regular on-site work to capture content and support museum activities.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
