SFCS is seeking a Design Architect to join our Roanoke, Virginia office. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with architects, engineers, interior designers, planners, and clients to create thoughtful, innovative environments that positively impact the communities we serve.
This opportunity is ideal for an experienced, mid-level, architectural professional who enjoys developing creative design solutions, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and translating ideas into meaningful spaces from concept through design development. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong design sensibilities, excellent communication skills, and a passion for creating environments that balance aesthetics, functionality, and client goals.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from an accredited institution.
- Licensed Architect preferred; candidates actively pursuing licensure are encouraged to apply.
- Experience supporting architectural projects from conceptual design through design development.
- Experience serving senior living, healthcare, education, government, mixed-use, hospitality, or other institutional markets, with senior living experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of architectural design principles, space planning, site planning, building systems, and applicable building codes.
- Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, and Microsoft Office. Experience with visualization software such as Lumion, D5, or similar rendering platforms is a plus.
- Strong graphic, presentation, and visual communication skills.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating conceptual design, design development, and creative problem-solving across a variety of project types.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple project assignments.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Willingness and ability to travel periodically in support of client meetings, design workshops, presentations, site visits, and collaboration across SFCS offices.
Responsibilities
- Develop innovative architectural concepts that align with client goals, project requirements, and SFCS design standards.
- Participate in conceptual design, design development, and project presentations, helping translate ideas into thoughtful and buildable design solutions.
- Prepare presentation materials, renderings, diagrams, graphics, and design narratives that effectively communicate project vision.
- Collaborate closely with Project Managers, Project Architects, Interior Designers, Engineers, Planners, and consultants throughout project development.
- Coordinate design intent with technical teams to support a seamless transition into construction documentation.
- Contribute to site planning, campus planning, and master planning efforts, as appropriate for assigned projects.
- Assist in the development of material palettes, finish selections, and design studies that support project objectives.
- Participate in client meetings, design workshops, interviews, and proposal presentations while incorporating client feedback throughout the design process.
- Collaborate with Project Managers to develop design solutions that align with project scope, budget, schedule, and client goals.
- Develop design solutions that support applicable building codes, accessibility requirements, and project-specific regulations.
- Support construction administration activities, as needed, to maintain design intent throughout construction.
- Stay current with evolving design trends, technologies, sustainable design practices, materials, and visualization tools.
- Provide guidance and support to early career architectural professionals while contributing to a collaborative and creative studio environment.
