THE POSITION

If so, look no further than the Department of Labor & Industry, Unemployment Compensation Board of Review (UCBR) Scranton Referee Office. We are currently seeking a highly motivated and organized professional to provide essential support for referee staff. This position offers an opportunity to support important appeals that help shape fair decisions for workers and employers. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position helps support the work of the Referee office by reviewing appeals, organizing case files, and assisting with the preparation and scheduling of hearings. The role requires careful attention to legal requirements and strong communication with parties involved in the appeals process. As a Legal Assistant 2, you will perform the following duties:

  • Case Review: Examine appeal work items and determine proper hearing details based on laws and regulations
  • File Preparation: Organize exhibits and ensure case records are accurate and complete for hearings
  • Scheduling Support: Arrange and adjust hearing schedules while considering needs of referees and involved parties
  • Document Handling: Process legal documents such as continuances, withdrawals, and subpoenas in line with established rules
  • Public Interaction: Respond to calls, emails, and visitor questions with clear and courteous communication
  • Record Maintenance: Maintain electronic and paper case files and update systems to reflect all case activity

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch. Work hours are negotiable with 30-minute lunch break.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, after successful completion of training. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Scranton. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a Legal Assistant 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Four years of responsible clerical, investigative or enforcement work including one year of legal clerical support experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
