Department Information

Motivated by the societal impacts of rapidly advancing technology and the imperative to enhance civic education and engagement, Georgia Tech has launched an Institute for Technology and Civic Leadership (ITCL). This new institute aspires to be a pioneering academic and public-facing unit that prepares students and faculty to lead in a democratic society and contribute to solving the complex technological and societal challenges of our time.

Grounded in Georgia Tech's mission to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition, and the foundational principles of the American republic, the Institute will combine transformative teaching, multi-stakeholder engagement, and bipartisan dialogue to develop and support civic-minded technological leaders and policy-aware innovators equipping them to lead in a pluralistic system and an interconnected, innovation-driven world.

Established in 1990, the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts is a pioneer of liberal arts education and research at the nexus of the technical and human sciences. Founded with the principles of its namesake, former Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen Jr., the College of Liberal Arts believes in the power of transformative urban leadership that is rooted in courage, compassion, and human and social justice. The Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts exemplifies Mayor Allen's legacy through its cross-disciplinary teaching, research, and service. In a research-intensive environment, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts faculty and students examine a wide range of social and humanistic issues, defining their impact on society, culture, and policy, and exploring solutions in the public interest.
