We are seeking an experienced engineering leader to play a critical role in advancing Workiva's platform and product evolution. Workiva is reshaping how our platform is built, scaled, and experienced - bringing together modern engineering practices, AI, and scalable architecture to unlock the next phase of growth for our products and customers.

Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you will lead engineering teams and partner across Product, Design, and Engineering to deliver scalable, high-quality software and drive strategic technical initiatives across the organization. You'll take on complex, cross-cutting challenges that don't fit neatly within a single team or domain.

This role is well-suited for a leader who is comfortable operating across organizational boundaries, navigating ambiguity, and driving meaningful outcomes in a complex, evolving environment.

What You'll Do Drive Engineering and Platform Strategy
  • Contribute to and help execute the strategy for Workiva's engineering and platform capabilities, with a focus on scalability, reliability, and long-term platform evolution

  • Partner across Engineering, Product, and Design to align platform investments with business priorities and customer needs

  • Support the evolution toward a more unified, scalable, and modern platform architecture

  • Promote engineering best practices, technical excellence, and sustainable system design across teams

Build Foundations for AI-Enabled Experiences
  • Enable the platform for AI-native use cases, ensuring systems are designed for scalability, flexibility, and extensibility

  • Partner with teams to integrate AI capabilities into products and workflows in a way that is practical, reliable, and aligned with customer value

  • Encourage thoughtful adoption of AI technologies, balancing innovation with correctness, security, and maintainability

  • Support development of systems and tooling that improve engineering efficiency and product capabilities through AI-assisted approaches

Lead Large-Scale Execution
  • Lead multiple teams and initiatives in parallel, ensuring alignment with business priorities

  • Translate strategy into clear plans, priorities, and measurable outcomes

  • Identify and address risks, dependencies, and bottlenecks to maintain momentum across interconnected systems and teams

  • Promote modern engineering and architectural approaches to achieve platform and product goals in an accelerated timeframe

  • Partner with other leaders to ensure strong organizational design and alignment to priorities

  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement

Enable AI-Native Ways of Working
  • Lead adoption of AI-assisted development practices to improve engineering velocity, quality, and leverage across teams

  • Identify opportunities to modernize and rethink workflows, processes, and operating models using AI (e.g., development, testing, debugging, documentation, and support)

  • Partner with engineering leaders to embed AI tooling into day-to-day workflows in a way that is practical, scalable, and measurable

  • Encourage teams to experiment with and adopt new tools responsibly, balancing speed with correctness, security, and maintainability

  • Help establish evolving best practices for how engineering teams effectively use AI to build, operate, and support the platform

  • Challenge legacy team structures and organizational boundaries to build small, empowered, cross-functional teams that align to outcomes

What You'll Need: Minimum Qualifications:
  • 12+ years of progressive software engineering experience

  • 5+ years of people management experience including leading managers in a product development organization

  • Undergraduate Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems, platform engineering, or cloud-native architectures

  • Expertise with modern software engineering practices and scalable application development

  • Experience evolving systems or organizations to support scale and growth

  • Strong communication and influencing skills across technical and non-technical audiences

  • Proven ability to deliver complex, cross-team initiatives in a SaaS environment

  • Experience working across organizational boundaries to drive alignment and outcomes

  • Strong track record of building and developing high-performing teams

  • Appreciation of scaling by developing people and not just process

  • A 'make-it-work' mindset without a need for excessive bureaucracy and red-tape
