Department Summary

The Department of Music Performance, Education & Composition provides comprehensive training in Western classical music through rigorous academic study, practical musicianship, and individualized artistic growth. Undergraduate programs emphasize a blend of performance practice, music theory and history, one-on-one instruction with experienced artist-teachers, and collaborative ensemble work that equips students for professional musical careers. Graduate study expands into advanced degrees in performance, composition, conducting, and jazz performance (in partnership with the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA). The department fosters collaboration between performance and scholarship and supports transformative engagement with artistic communities locally and globally. Students benefit from a rich array of performance opportunities and masterclasses with internationally recognized guest artists, enhancing both their technical mastery and artistic imagination. The UCLA Marching Band is housed within the Department of Music Performance, Education & Composition at the Herb Alpert School of Music. Both the Department Manager and Department Chair maintain a vested interest in Marching Band operations.
Position Summary

The Band Assistant Director is an experienced professional with extensive background in Marching Band organizations. The incumbent applies organizational and instructional theories relevant to the unique culture, structure, and performative support to the UCLA Marching and Varsity Bands. This role involves a split focus between Instructional/Program Support (55%) and Logistics/Operations (45%). The Assistant Director acts as a primary instructional leader and operational manager, prioritizing tasks according to established department guidelines and University policies. Position is supervised by and reports to the Director of the UCLA Marching and Varsity Bands. The Assistant Director prioritizes and completes ongoing tasks following established department guidelines and University policies. Assignments are made by the Director and Associate Directors of the UCLA Marching and Varsity Bands and the Department of Music Performance, Education & Composition Manager, with review and guidance as required.

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications

  • 3 years plus Experience in performance and/or Marching Band. (Required)
  • Possess excellent spoken and written English skills; ability to produce logical, concise, and grammatically correct correspondence and interpret documents; explain complex policies and procedures clearly to individuals at various organizational levels. (Required)
  • Ability to independently analyze data, information, policies, and procedures in a fast-paced environment with heavy workloads and tight deadlines. Ability to work independently with minimal direction. (Required)
  • Interact, collaborate, and communicate with people of diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds in a professional manner; maintain an assertive yet friendly and diplomatic demeanor; maintain confidentiality and use discretion. (Preferred)
  • Hold a basic understanding of musical notation/terminology, marching band fundamentals, and drill design. (Required)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and other office software; familiarity with or ability to learn university systems such as BruinBuy Plus and Concur, as well as financial, inventory, and project management platforms. (Required)
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn best practices in financial management, inventory control, procurement, reconciliation, and vendor relations. (Required)
  • Ability to work an irregular schedule includes occasional nights, weekends, and holidays based on band needs (e.g., games/matches, post-season travel, special events). (Required)
  • Experience with planning, organizing, producing, and executing major events requiring coordination with multiple stakeholders. (Required)
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices in undergraduate student teaching and learning; proven track record of teaching/administration in a university athletic bands program; graduate assistantships will be considered. (Required)
  • Experience creating and/or rehearsing drills, musical arrangements, choreography, or auxiliary work (e.g., color guard); understanding of marching band-related music technology (e.g., Pyware). (Required)
  • Possess (or be able to obtain) a valid California driver's license. Experience with equipment vehicles (e.g., box truck, equipment, or cargo van). (Required)

  • Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Bachelor's Degree In related area and/or equivalent combination of education and experience in training. (Required)
  • Master's Degree Master's or advanced degree in related area. (Preferred)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
