Open Heart Surgery Unit Overview
The Open Heart Surgery unit at GW Hospital is a highly specialized environment focused on cardiac surgical procedures, including coronary artery bypass grafts, valve repairs and replacements, and other complex heart operations. The unit features advanced technology and a collaborative team of surgeons, nurses, and surgical technologists committed to delivering high-quality, life-saving care.

Senior Surgical Tech Role
As a Senior Surgical Tech in the Open Heart Surgery unit, you will play a vital role on the surgical team, assisting with complex cardiac procedures. You will ensure a sterile field, manage specialized instruments, and support the surgical team before, during, and after operations. Your experience and leadership will contribute to safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical outcomes in a high-acuity setting.

Main Tasks

  • Prepare and maintain the sterile operating field for open-heart surgeries
  • Assist surgeons during cardiac procedures by passing instruments and anticipating needs
  • Operate and troubleshoot specialized surgical equipment
  • Ensure proper handling and accountability of surgical instruments and supplies
  • Support and mentor junior surgical techs and assist with staff training
  • Strictly adhere to infection control and patient safety protocols
  • Document procedures and maintain accurate records

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program
  • Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of recent surgical tech experience, with experience in open heart or cardiac surgery required
  • BLS (AHA-certified)

Preferred:

  • Advanced cardiac surgery experience
  • Experience mentoring or training staff
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree
