Position Summary Information






Primary Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Clinic Manager, Special Care Clinic, assists students and faculty in all clinical aspects of patient care and treatment and coordinates all aspects of the hospital cases for the Special Care Clinic.

Essential Functions

  • Perform patient care duties related to hospital dentistry to include schedule operating room cases for various locations, organize and prioritize awaiting cases, schedule OR screenings, place confirmation telephone calls, retrieve/dispense charts, file x-rays.


  • Work with care providers, legal conservators, and regional centers for paperwork and all consents forms.
  • Review with students the process required at the hospital with obtaining sterile PPE, hand scrubbing, gowning, infection control, ergonomics, and dental team/ patient positioning.
  • Explain Special Care Clinic policies/procedures as they relate to dental treatment and financial obligations.
  • Put together patient charts with all appropriate paperwork to include legal conservatorship documents, preauthorization approvals, medical history/physical results; fax information to hospital as needed; set-up appointment for post-operative check as needed.
  • Work with appropriate hospital personnel to order hospital supplies; clean and maintain dental/hospital inventory and equipment.
  • Loading and unloading all instruments from assigned cart, dental assist in the operating room; take and mount x-rays; maintain and sterilize dental instruments.
  • Prepares the operating room, helps with patient positioning, and assists the surgeon during the operation by passing instruments and supplies while students observe the surgeon.
  • Responsible for managing all the instruments and supplies on the sterile field.
  • Submittal of preauthorization and all supporting documents to primary healthcare coverage. Track authorizations and forwards to the treating facility.
  • Caring for special needs individuals who have moderate to severe medical and developmental conditions including, but not limited to neuromuscular disorders, seizure disorders, cardiac conditions, bleeding disorders, those awaiting heart/liver transplants, and those patients who are uncooperative/combative.
  • Perform chair-side duties in the Special Care Clinic to include four-handed dentistry.
  • Pour diagnostic models and perform minor laboratory procedures.
  • Assist with and conduct Special Care Clinic and community public relations projects.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Clinic Manager, Special Care Clinic.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:

  • Dental terminology and treatments.
  • Dental insurance billing procedures.
  • Chairside dental assisting.
  • Dental assisting in a hospital environment
  • Sterilization and infection control procedures.
  • Emergency procedures including CPR.
  • General office methods.
  • Basic use of Excel, Microsoft, Word, & Outlook.


Experience:

  • Minimum of one year increasing responsibility in a dental office or dental school to include chairside dental assisting.
  • Minimum of one year experience in hospital dentistry.

Education/Licenses:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current RDA license.
  • Current California x-ray license.
  • Current CPR certification.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience:

  • Experience in Medi-Cal billing strongly preferred.

  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff and patients.

  • Project a professional image.
  • Work in fast paced environment and maintain professional composure and demeanor.
  • Manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.

Education/Licenses:
  • Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Assistant / Oral Surgery Assistant not required but a plus.
Other:

  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
