Postdoctoral Researcher - Biophysics

Medical College of Wisconsin
parental leave, paid holidays, tuition reimbursement, 403(b)
United States, Wisconsin, Milwaukee
May 06, 2026
Summary

The Wang Lab in the Department of Biophysics at the Medical College of Wisconsin is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join our research team focused on the structural and functional analysis of oncogenic noncoding RNAs. We utilize a multidisciplinary approach that integrates biochemical, biophysical, and structural biology techniques, including NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and cryo-electron microscopy, to explore ribonucleoprotein (RNP) structure-function relationships and identify opportunities for RNP-targeted therapeutic intervention in cancer and related diseases. This position offers an exciting opportunity for candidates passionate about cutting-edge structural biology and RNA-targeted drug discovery, with the potential to develop novel experimental approaches and lead research projects in a collaborative and well-resourced environment.

The Department of Biophysics at the Medical College of Wisconsin has a rich tradition of innovation and excellence in structural biology and biomedical imaging, with particular strengths in EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance), NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). The department offers access to state-of-the-art facilities for NMR (solution and solid-state), EPR, MRI, X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, mass spectrometry, high-performance computing, and biomolecular analysis. MCW is Wisconsin's largest private research institution and the third-largest private medical school in the U.S. The institution fosters a collaborative environment that integrates basic science, clinical research, and education to advance biomedical knowledge and human health.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Design and execute experiments to investigate the structure and dynamics of noncoding RNAs and associated RNP using biophysical and structural techniques (e.g., NMR, X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM)

  • Conduct biochemical assays to study RNA-protein and RNA-small molecule interactions

  • Perform in vitro transcription, RNA purification, labeling, and structural probing

  • Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and contribute to manuscript preparation

  • Present research findings at lab meetings, institutional seminars, and scientific conferences

  • Mentor graduate students and contribute to training and scientific development within the lab

  • Assist with the development of grant proposals and collaborative research initiatives

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities
  • Hands-on experience in at least one structural biology technique (e.g., NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM)

  • Strong background in protein or nucleic acid biochemistry

  • Proven ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and troubleshoot experiments

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Exposure to biophysical characterization approaches (e.g., ITC, SPR, and AFM)

  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals

  • Familiarity with protein or RNA structural determination

Qualifications

Minimum Required Education: Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Structural Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline (or expected within 6 months of the start date)

Minimum Required Experience:0 years

Preferred Experience: Experience with protein or RNA expression and purification and in insect and mammalian expression systems

Physical Requirements

Work requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials, standing, or walking continuously.

Work Environment

Occasional exposure to dust, noise, temperature changes, or contact with water or other liquids. Work is performed in an environmentally controlled environment.

Sensory Acuity

Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required. May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.
