About the Job

This substitute Education Lead position offers the opportunity to mentor high school students to promote STEM education and career development, with a particular focus on engaging and
encouraging students with little exposure to higher education. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about science and public health, able to mentor undergraduates, and experienced
with coordinating programs for teenagers.

This position is based out of Minneapolis, MN and is eligible for hybrid work from home and/or on campus work dependent upon individual performance and organizational need, though some regular on-site work will be expected. Because the University of Minnesota is a land-grant institution that serves the state, residing in Minnesota is typically required.

This is a temporary position expected to last through August 2026 with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance, availability of work, and departmental/ grant funding.

M-ASCEND is an NIH grant-funded program that is a collaboration between the Masonic Cancer Center and the Program for Health Disparities Research. M-ASCEND offers 8 high school juniors the opportunity to work on UMN-Minneapolis campus two days/week in July. In the program high school interns will build foundational research skills; attend lectures on health disparities, public health and cancer biology; learn lab skills; network and tour professional UMN research labs; and build college readiness and professional skills.

Undergraduate mentors will support this position in providing daily programming for the high schoolers all Wednesdays and Thursdays in July on campus from 8:30am-3:30pm, in addition to leading set up, clean up, and virtual work/ team meetings. This role requires training undergraduate support to deliver lectures on college readiness and assist in activities. This role will also attend daily lunch, professional lab visits, and lectures with the high schoolers to support Safety of Minors protocol. This position is 30-40 hours/week will last until August.

Job Description:

Program Coordination (80%):

  • Lead 1-2 sessions a day on college or workforce readiness, networking, and career-building.
  • Review existing materials.
  • Support undergraduate mentors in leading their sessions.
  • Topics include goal setting, time management, college resources, professional communication, public health, research & poster creation, etc.
  • Daily collaboration and communication with other staff and undergraduate lead.
  • Maintaining compliance with UMN Safety of Minors policy, constantly working to create and maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment for participants.
  • Track progress on homework updates shared task lists and assist with reminders and extra support as needed.
  • Supervise and support undergraduate peer-mentors to maximize their impact and connection with students and develop leadership.
  • Facilitate panels, Q&A and networking sessions with UMN faculty, staff, researchers and other professional guests.
  • Establish and maintain constructive and engaged working relationships.

Administrative (20%):

  • Daily organization of sign-in sheets, attendance updates, etc.
  • Send daily group reminders as to dress code, room location, and what items to bring.
  • Confirm all food orders with PHDR administration for networking events.
  • Daily communication with the bus transit company regarding absences and route changes.
  • Maintain open communication with caregivers/parents/guardians.
  • Report any concerning issues to leadership, including participant housing/food insecurity.
  • Meet with other program staff multiple times per week to plan upcoming schedule, confirm budgeting, set meal plans, etc.
  • Issue and review weekly evaluations to participants.
  • Print and distribute student schedules and materials for lectures.
  • Update and adjust the master schedule as needed.
Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required Qualifications:

  • Able to accept legal employment for UMN-Twin Cities.
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, Chemistry, Public Health, or related, plus two years of experience or a combination of education and related work experience to equal at least six years.
  • Experience with program coordination, event management, or related.
  • Experience working with teenagers - a background check and Safety of Minors training will also be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multilingual
  • Experience conducting research and giving research presentations.
  • Experience leading science activities, presentations and/or discussions.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $23.84-$29.19 per hour, we anticipate most offers will be around the midpoint of this range, depending on education and experience.

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
