JOB SUMMARY:
This is a developmental position within the Engineering Department providing candidates with exposure to and experience in Public Works Engineering. The candidate will perform general duties under the direction of and in support of engineers, inspectors, and technicians.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ENGINEER I INTERN ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under the technical guidance and support of the Manager of Engineering:
- Gathers data in the field to support civil engineering projects and engineering analysis tasks.
- Inputs data into spreadsheets or databases
- Researches records, plans, or files in accordance with assigned tasks
- Copies, files, or reproduces engineering reports, plans or other documents.
- Supports field staff in performing inspection and quality control tasks on utility, public works, or Capital Improvement project construction.
- Operates a vehicle on a regular basis, observing legal and defensive driving practices.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma.
- Interest in pursuing a career in civil engineering, environmental engineering, construction management, engineering technology, or related field.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
- Vehicle Operator's license with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.
REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):
- Proficiency in the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office software.
OTHER DESIRABLES:
- Currently enrolled or accepted into a civil engineering, environmental engineering, construction management, engineering technology or similar degree program.
ENGINEER II INTERN
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under the technical guidance and support of the Manager or a Division Manager in Engineering:
- Gathers data in the field for civil engineering projects and engineering analysis tasks, such as topographical surveys, flow monitoring, traffic data, soils/ geotechnical, hydrologic data.
- Establishes and inputs data into spreadsheets, databases, computer models, etc.
- Researches records, plans, or files in accordance with assigned tasks.
- Copies, files, or reproduces engineering reports, plans or other documents.
- Supports staff in performing field inspection and quality control tasks on utility, public works, or Capital Improvement project construction.
- Reviews applications, permits, engineers estimates or engineering reports, in accordance with defined instructions, to gather or input data or identify errors/ omissions.
- Edits or produces minor exhibits and technical drawings using AutoCAD.
- Supports topographical, land, boundary or other surveying projects and tasks.
- Operates Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment to capture coordinates.
- If requested, may complete a defined short-term project that synchronizes with an engineering department function or project within the candidates chosen field of study.
- Operates a vehicle on a regular basis, observing legal and defensive driving practices.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

- Currently enrolled and completed at least two (2) years in pursuit of a degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Surveying, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or similar program from an accredited college or university.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
- Vehicle Operator's license with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.
REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):
- Proficiency in the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office software.
OTHER DESIRABLES:
- Experience (classroom) in using AutoCAD.
- Experience (classroom) in surveying principles and practices.
- Active student member of campus engineering societies such as National Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Water Works Association, or American Public Works Association.
- Cumulative GPA > 3.00.
