Job Summary
The Animal Technician supports laboratory research programs by providing comprehensive care for laboratory animals, including rodents, in accordance with established protocols and regulatory requirements. This role is responsible for daily animal husbandry, sanitation, and health monitoring across multiple facilities.

Under the direction of the Animal Resources Supervisor or assigned lead, the Animal Technician performs all duties within the scope of an Assistant Animal Technician while demonstrating the ability to work independently, identify issues, and take appropriate corrective action. The position contributes to maintaining compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations governing laboratory animal care and use.

Scope of Duties

  • Provide daily care, feeding, and watering of laboratory animals.
  • Perform cage changing, rack cleaning, and room sanitation.
  • Monitor animal health and report concerns to veterinary or supervisory staff.
  • Maintain animal housing areas and equipment per standard operating procedures.
  • Perform routine record keeping, including:
    • Per diem records.
    • Animal health surveillance logs.
    • Feed and environmental logs (temperature/humidity).
    • Animal receipt and disposition records.
  • Operate and maintain sanitation equipment such as cage washers and autoclaves.
  • Support animal husbandry and basic technical procedures as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory and safety standards.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Minimum 1 year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation experience.
  • Knowledge of animal care standards, including feeding, caging, and housing requirements.
  • Ability to identify and communicate animal health concerns effectively.
  • Familiarity with sanitation, disinfection practices, and related equipment.
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance requirements for laboratory animal care.
  • Basic computer skills (email, electronic record systems, barcode scanning, timesheets).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to follow workplace safety and compliance rules.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, and reach for extended periods (up to 7 hours/day).
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in environments requiring personal protective equipment (PPE), including:
    • Protective clothing, gloves, safety glasses, and masks.
    • Respirators as required.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One of the following:
    • Completion of AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification and 1 year of animal care experience, or
    • 2 years of animal care experience with relevant species, or
    • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
