Position / Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide strategic leadership and coordination for Dallas College's districtwide Student Media program, supporting student-led publications and media initiatives across all seven campuses. The manager leads strategic planning, budget oversight, fosters an inclusive, educational environment where students develop skills in multimedia storytelling, and digital content creation.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates student media operations across all Dallas College campuses, ensuring alignment with the College's mission and student success goals.
  • Provides strategic vision and leadership for student publications, including print, digital, and video platforms.
  • Maintains high standards of journalistic integrity, media law compliance, and professional conduct.
  • Assist in advising and mentoring student editors, reporters, producers, and content creators in developing and distributing content that reflects diverse student voices and campus communities.
  • Proficiency in budget management for student media operations.
  • Supports training and development in areas such as reporting, editing, photography, video production, podcasting, social media, and digital publishing across the seven campuses.
  • Supports the integration of multimedia tools and platforms, including Adobe Creative Suite, and content management systems (e.g., WordPress).
  • Collaborate with faculty advisers to develop and implement policies and procedures that support student press rights and editorial independence.
  • Builds partnerships with faculty, staff, and external media organizations to enhance student opportunities and visibility.
  • Organizes districtwide initiatives such as media workshops, student showcases, and recognition events.
  • Serves as liaison to college leadership, student organizations, and campus faculty advisers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Required Dallas College Professional Development Hours per Academic Year.
  • All employees are required to complete a minimum of 19 hours.
  • People leaders are required an additional 16 hours of leadership development.
  • Perform other duties not listed as assigned.

The following duties are required for People Leader roles specifically:

  • Exercises full discretion and decision-making authority in the recruitment, selection, hiring, mentoring, coaching, development & termination of staff, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, budgetary constraints, and workforce planning strategies.
  • Drive high performance by administering the performance management process timely, setting clear expectations, conducting performance evaluations, and implementing initiatives that enhance employee engagement, motivation, and retention.

Minimum and Preferred - Education, Experience, and/or Certifications

Required Qualifications for Role (necessary or mandatory)

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communication, Media Studies, Mass Communication or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in journalism, media production, or student media advising, including budget oversight
  • Valid Texas driver's license and ability to travel between locations.
  • Must complete required Dallas College Professional Development training annually.
  • Subject to background and fingerprint checks.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working in student media within a higher education setting.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, content management systems, and broadcast tools.
  • Knowledge of student press law, media ethics, and newsroom management.
  • Familiarity with social media strategy and multimedia storytelling.
  • Ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure of Dallas College.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required Qualifications for Role

  • Standard office software (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Media production tools (DSLR cameras, video/audio equipment, editing software)
  • Preferred: Adobe Creative Suite, radio/TV studio equipment, CMS platforms

Other Preferred Qualifications for Role (not mandatory, but advantageous)

  • Strong leadership, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects across a distributed college system.
  • Commitment inclusion in student media content and staffing.
