Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Athletic Department is a vital part of student life and the educational process at Elizabeth City State University. It provides a well-rounded schedule of college athletic competitions designed to encourage participation by the student body. The department encourages physical fitness and the development of physical skills and emotional control.
Description of Work
The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for designing, implementing performance programming, and monitoring weight training and conditioning for 10 varsity sports, and daily weight room upkeep. Constant communication from the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach to the head sport coaches, and athletic training staff will be required. In addition, the program is responsible for instructing and preparing student-athletes for successful competition and performance in all sports.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Working knowledge of Division II, NCAA, CIAA, and University rules and regulations.
Develop and execute plans, policies, and procedures for strength and conditioning training programs.
Coordinate with head coaches to develop year-round training programs that are specific to ECSU varsity sports.
Provide athletes training on the execution of proper technique in strength and conditioning activities.
Coordinate team and group workouts.
Procurement of assistants, interns, and work-study to assist with the overall strength and conditioning program.
Develop a record-keeping system and tracking of the individual progress of student-athletes.
Assess data of training programs for each sport.
Perform routine maintenance of strength and fitness equipment; reporting the needed repairs to the Director of Athletics or designee.
Maintain orderly and safe environments.
Become knowledgeable of and abide by all NCAA, CIAA, and University rules/regulations.
Meet with athletic staff to discuss student welfare and to review performance programming expectations.
Communicate information to athletes, coaches, and athletic administrators as appropriate.
Conduct an annual or as-needed training with all coaches regarding performance, weight training, and conditioning.
Organize and conduct summer clinics for student-athletes.
Research and recommend new techniques, strategy and equipment that would enhance the strength and conditioning program.

Possess the ability to plan, organize and control projects through to completion within given timeframes; possess strong follow-up and follow-through skills.
Minimum Training and Experience
A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree is preferred, with an emphasis in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Physical Education, Kinesiology or closely related field (including but not limited to Exercise and Sport Science, Exercise Physiology, Physiology, Athletic Training, or Rehabilitation Sciences).

Experience: Minimum of one year experience is required in progressively responsible positions involving the development and management of sport-specific individual and group strength training programs for men and women. Experience with development and management of strength training programs at the college/university level is preferred. Student-athlete experience, in any sport at the collegiate level, is preferred.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
Certification Needed:
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist ( CSCS), National Strength and Conditioning Association ( NSCA), Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association ( CSCCA), or National Association of Sports Medicine ( NASM)
