Summary

Spire is seeking a Manager, Accounting that will focus on coordinating many activities within the Accounting department to ensure accurate and timely reporting of key components of the Company's financial statements, completing management reporting variance explanations, and providing key work papers to support the external financial reporting team. This job is responsible for maintenance of quality control standards around the preparation of journal entries and work papers and the review of such work products to support the consolidated monthly financial statement process. Will oversee Capital and O&M projects and their entire lifecycle; collaborate with other functional areas, including but not limited to Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), Operations Controller, Pipeline Management, Organic Growth, Customer Experience, and Regulatory. In addition, this manager position is responsible for guiding, motivating, and evaluating employees to ensure they are performing to the best of their abilities.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead for cross-departmental collaborations with Customer Experience, Gas Supply, Business Development, and Measurement, to assure Transportation billing processes are working as designed
  • Own the results of numerous SOX controls
  • Monitor monthly Transportation billing process for the two Southeast utilities, to ensure all pieces are happening in the correct sequence and with materially correct results
  • Coordinate execution and ensure quality and timeliness of monthly closing deliverables, including, but not limited to, revenue, gas cost, and cash
  • Analyze, review, and approve the work of direct reports
  • Review account analyses and supporting work papers prepared by direct reports for accuracy and compliance with accounting policies
  • Train and assist direct reports in accounting procedures and problem solving, as well as identifying and implementing process improvement opportunities
  • Manage the recording, review, and documentation of all billing inputs resulting in bills for customers, any required adjustments, and journal entries transactions prepared and recorded by direct reports
  • Provide analytical review to confirm accuracy of reported results consistent with expected business outcomes. Provide business leaders with actionable information from comprehensive variance analysis.
  • Support the Director, Accounting by ensuring financial reporting and accounting controls and related documentation are in place and tested in compliance with SOX 404 requirements, including IPE documentation
  • Support the preparation and review of deliverables supporting external filings to various regulatory bodies as requested by the Director, Accounting. Perform other quarterly/annual projects as needed, such as providing information for regulatory requests and budgeting and forecasting requirements.
  • Assist internal and external auditors in completing audits relating to various filings
  • Complete various report requests from executive management or others within the organization to support the business needs of the Company
  • All other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

* Requires supervision of up to 5 direct reports


Required Education (certifications, licenses)

* Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or similar degree


* A graduate degree (e.g., MBA) is preferred


* CPA preferred




Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience
  • Experience in a regulated environment, strongly preferred
  • Strong, detailed knowledge of US GAAP
  • Knowledge of FERC accounting requirements, preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience working in large scale ERP systems such as Oracle & SAP
  • 2+ years of previous management experience preferred


Physical demands, environment and schedule

Work Environment: Work is normally performed in a shared office environment

Working Hours: Typically, 8 hours a day, Monday through Friday. Overtime may be required to meet strict deadlines

Travel: Occasional travel may be required
