Job Description

Job Summary:

Rockwood Casualty Insurance Company, a division of Argo Group, specializes in workers' compensation insurance for mining, oil & gas, niche specialty industries, and Main Street businesses. The Underwriting Data Analyst is responsible for the preparation, analysis, and distribution of loss and financial reporting that supports underwriting, actuarial, finance, Loss Control, insureds, and agents. This role produces and analyzes Monthly Large Loss reports, Large Deductible analyses, Quarterly, Semi-Annual, and Yearly paid-detail loss reports, as well as recurring weekly and monthly calendar reporting, identifying trends, loss drivers, and notable activity to inform underwriting and financial decision-making. The position coordinates reporting schedules to ensure efficiency and consistency, maintains and updates payroll exposure worksheets, supports weekly Premium Flash Report preparation and validation, and partners with business stakeholders and the Power BI team to ensure accurate integration of rate change, loss, and Loss Control data into dashboards and enterprise reporting tools. Acting as a key liaison between business users and data teams, the Underwriting Data Analyst ensures data integrity, clarity of reporting definitions, and alignment across departments, strengthening data-driven decision-making and enhancing overall underwriting performance.

Scope of Work:

Loss Reporting and Analysis

  • Prepare and distribute Monthly Large Loss Analysis reports, including identification of trends, drivers, and notable loss activity.
  • Analyze Large Deductible reports to support underwriting, actuarial, and financial decision-making.
  • Produce Quarterly and Semi-Annual Loss Analysis reports for insureds and agents, focusing on performance trends and loss development.
  • Generate Yearly paid-detail loss reports for insureds and agents, ensuring accuracy and completeness of historical data.

Recurring Reporting

  • Prepare and deliver Monthly Financial Reports to insureds and agents.
  • Produce Calendar Monthly Loss Reports for insureds and agents.
  • Distribute Weekly Loss Reports to insureds and agents, ensuring timely and consistent delivery.
  • Coordinate reporting schedules to ensure reports are produced efficiently without duplicating analyses across timeframes.
  • Build, maintain, and update payroll report Excel worksheets to support reporting, audits, and analysis.
  • Amend payroll reports as needed to reflect updated exposures, corrections, or client-specific requirements.

Premium Flash Report Support

  • Serve as a backup resource for preparation and review of the Premium Flash Report, providing continuity during peak periods or absences.
  • Assist with validation of data inputs and outputs to ensure accuracy and timeliness.

Data & Power BI Enablement

  • Support data initiatives to ensure successful implementation and adoption of Power BI across the organization.
  • Coordinate with the Power BI team to validate and reconcile:
    • Rate change data integrated into Power BI dashboards
    • Loss Control reports and datasets incorporated into Power BI
  • Act as a liaison between business users and the Power BI team to clarify data definitions, requirements, and reporting needs. Support testing to ensure data accuracy.

Loss Control Data Support

  • Assist the Loss Control team with data preparation, reporting, and analytics support.
  • Prepare Monthly Large Loss reports for Loss Control distribution to clients, ensuring alignment with underwriting and financial reporting outputs.

Required Technical Skills:

  • Strong computer skills, knowledge of claims, auditing & underwriting procedures.
  • Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, index/match, formulas, data validation, Power Query)
  • Microsoft Word and PowerPoint (report formatting, executive-ready presentations)
  • Data analysis and trend analysis
  • Financial and loss data interpretation
  • Power BI (report validation, dashboard testing, data reconciliation)
  • Data visualization and dashboard design concepts

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods while working at a computer
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate a keyboard, mouse, and other standard office equipment
  • Ability to read and analyze information on computer screens and in printed materials
  • Occasional movement within the office to attend meetings or access files and office equipment
  • Ability to lift and carry materials up to 10-15 pounds (e.g., files, documents, office supplies)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, via phone, and through virtual meeting platforms

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university required or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • A relentless desire to continually update your skill level through continuing education and self-development.
  • 1+ years of experience in a data supported role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
