Jefferson Lab is hiring 3 Data Infrastructure Engineers.

Salary Range: $89,800 - $159,300 (SCS-II)


What your job will be like:

You deploy, configure, test, and benchmark the core data infrastructure components being built for DOE's next-generation scientific data facility - HPDF (High-Performance Data Facility). Working closely with the senior architect, you evaluate infrastructure frameworks and solutions, turning performance results and comparative analysis into concrete design decisions that will shape the HPDF facility implementation. As the facility moves from design into operations, you grow into a foundational member of the HPDF data infrastructure operations team, bringing with you the hands-on knowledge of the systems you helped build.

In this job you will:
  • Deployment: Deploy, configure, and evaluate various data infrastructure elements and frameworks across development, staging, and production environments, working closely with the Senior Data Architect.
  • Execute defined test plans, collect performance metrics, and perform comparative benchmarking of infrastructure components to inform design decisions (e.g., latency, reliability, throughput, scale).
  • Automation and Documentation: Support the development of automation scripts for infrastructure setup and maintenance. Maintain clear and current documentation for deployment procedures, testing results, and system configurations.
  • Collaboration and communication: Work with peer engineers and architects to generate design documentation, participate in design reviews, and contribute to team and project milestones by delivering evaluation reports in a timely manner.
  • Continuous Learning: Maintain and expand knowledge of emerging data technologies by proactively identifying and evaluating them, tracking relevant AI developments, including developments at the intersection of data infrastructure and AI/ML workflows.
Experience
  • Required: 3 or more years Experience in a technical role.
Education
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • Preferred: Master's Degree Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
Experience and Education Exchange

Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Hands-on understanding of Linux operating systems and command-line tools.
  • Hands-on experience with containers, e.g. Docker.
  • Familiarity with core networking concepts including IP addressing, DNS, and basic network troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with at least one scripting language (e.g., Python, Bash).
  • Experience with version control systems, collaboratively using branches and pull requests and CI/CD concepts.
  • Experience with data frameworks like Apache Spark, object storage, Parquet, Apache Iceberg or similar.
  • Experience with automation frameworks (Puppet, Ansible, Terraform).
  • Experience with AI processing frameworks (MLFlow, ClearML or similar) (pref).
  • Experience with deploying or operating workloads on Kubernetes (pref).
  • Basic cloud platform familiarity (AWS, GCP, Azure) (pref).
