Overview

The Caltech Security Department is hiring occasional security officers to serve as security ambassadors at special events and in other designated support roles on campus. The position may also augment basic patrol assignments as needed.

Caltech Security provides a safe and secure environment for all members of the Caltech community, including students, staff, faculty, visitors, and guests. The Security Ambassador position will be a visible presence on campus, interacting with the Caltech community regularly. Excellent customer service skills are required.

Specific Duties
  • Provide high visibility foot, bicycle, and vehicle patrols of campus grounds, parking lots, and facilities.
  • Respond to security calls and investigate suspicious activity.
  • Conduct fire watches and guard buildings during construction or utility disruptions.
  • May be requested to work weekends, non-standard hours, and holidays.
  • Must be able to understand and follow Caltech Security policies, practices, and procedures to support operational assignments.
  • Communicate clearly on a two-way radio using applicable 10-codes.
  • Observe and report incidents in a clear, accurate manner to Security supervisors.
  • Provide assistance to responding officers in emergency situations.
  • Provide customer service and assistance to campus guests and visitors.
  • Provide safety and disability escorts to the campus community upon request.
  • Secure buildings and property during campus-wide lockdowns and evacuations.
  • Help with raising and lowering the campus flags as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
  • A minimum of one year of law enforcement, fire department, or security experience.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Must have a valid BSIS California Guard Card upon hire and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Must possess a valid CA driver's license.
  • Must be able to adhere to the Institute's vehicle policy.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certifications are required at the time of hire.
  • Familiarity with security dispatch procedures.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds on a regular basis and walk, climb stairs, bend, and reach continuously.
Preferred Qualifications
  • EMT certification.
  • Some experience working in a security dispatch center or security operations center.
  • Security experience in an educational or higher education setting.

Hiring Range

$23.25 - $26.50 Per Hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
