Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a cost-effective system of care for trauma patients and their families. Works both independently and in collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director and other members of the health care team and the management staff.

Job Functions

1. Administration:

a. Participates in the development and planning of goals and objectives related to care of trauma patients.
b. Coordinates with the Trauma Medical Director, hospital administration, and clinicians to assess the need for policies, procedures, and protocols based on best practice relating to the care of trauma patients.
c. Develops and implements policies and procedures; makes recommendations for revisions; assists with updating policies and procedures based on current literature.
d. Represents the Trauma Program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and foster optimal trauma care management.
e. Supervises adherence to hospital policies, procedures and standards through observation, medical record review, staff feedback and other appropriate resources.

2. Program Initiatives:

a. Implements program initiatives.
b. Monitors and maintains compliance with the statewide trauma system requirements.
c. Coordinates preparation for the statewide trauma system designation and re-designation site visits.
d. Develops and fosters collaborative relationships with all hospital departments to facilitate and support quality trauma care.
e. Participates in state and regional trauma care activities.
f. Monitors national and statewide trends in trauma care.
g. Responds to trauma team activations that occur during work hours; functions in whatever role necessary to assist the team in the care of the patient.
h. Serves as a resource for the hospital staff regarding trauma care issues.
i. Plans and implements strategies for ongoing Trauma Program development and improvement.
j. Collaborates with the Trauma Medical Director, physicians and other health care professionals to provide clinical and system oversight for the care of trauma patients, ensuring the provision of efficient, quality care.

3. Performance Improvement:

a. Assists the Trauma Medical Director and hospital administration in the development, implementation and evaluation of a quality plan which is multi-disciplinary and patient-outcome focused.
b. Monitors trauma patient outcomes; evaluates for trends.
c. Coordinates with physicians, nurses, other in-hospital staff and outside providers to evaluate and address specific patient care issues.
d. Participates in case reviews.
e. Serves as the coordinator for the identification, investigation, reporting and follow up of incidents and quality issues throughout the program while maintaining confidentiality.
f. Monitors the trauma team's availability and compliance with policies and standards.
g. Develops and monitors the Trauma PI Program in collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director.
h. Assists in data collection related to the trauma patient.
i. Analyze registry data on the trauma patient population; identifies trends for strategic planning and performance improvement.
j. Ensures accurate data entry into the trauma registry.
k. Manages registry data; collects, analyzes trends.
l. Ensures periodic reporting of trauma data to the state Trauma Program.
m. Facilitates the measurement of selected outcomes for the trauma patient population.

4. Clinical Education:

a. Plans, coordinates and evaluates trauma-related educational programs for nursing staff.
b. Monitors physician and nurse compliance with the educational requirements of the Trauma Program.
c. Seeks and pursues opportunities for internal and external trauma-related educational programs for hospital staff.

5. Community Outreach:

a. Functions as a resource internally and in the community regarding education of the public regarding trauma prevention.
b. Seeks and pursues opportunities for internal and external trauma educational programs for patients, families, and the community.

Minimum Education/Work Experience


  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Minimum of three years clinical experience in trauma/emergency care

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities



  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships


  • Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions


  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above


  • Ability to design and implement change


  • Ability to problem-solve and make decisions


  • Critical thinking, analytical, researchand teaching/coaching skills

6. Performs RN Functions as needed

License/Certifications



  • Current registered nurse licensure in Minnesota or if licensed in another state, a permit from the Minnesota Board of Nursing while the license application is in process


  • BLS Certification


  • ACLS Certification


  • TNCC, CALS, CATN or ATCN Certification


Preferred Qualifications



  • CEN
