General Summary

The primary function of this role is to help patients find eyeglasses and contact lenses that are the best match for each individual while providing the highest levels of quality and care.

Essential Functions

Determine the reason for the patient's visit, identify lifestyle needs, and deliver recommendations to patients for eyewear needs following the prescription given by their optometrist

Attract and retain patients by delivering exceptional patient service, fostering patient retention, and promoting outstanding patient satisfaction

Assist the patient in the selection of frames and coordinate frames with optical measurements and prescription

Recommend specific lenses, lens coatings, and frames to suit patient needs, occupations, habits, and facial features

Take measurements of eyes, assist patients with adjustments and/or troubleshooting, and dispense eyewear

Repair eyewear as needed

Ensure correct pricing and realistic delivery time quotes to patients

Prepare and submit a work order to the optical laboratory that includes instructions for the grinding and mounting of lenses in frames

Final inspect completed orders to ensure they match the patient's order specification

Instruct patients on correct eyeglass and contact lens care and maintenance

Assist the patient with inserting, removing, and caring for contact lenses

Clean and merchandise displays on a daily basis, and ensure that patients have access to glasses by checking remaining inventory to restock empty displays

Assist with insurance billing and processing orders

Document all patient communication in patient records within the practice software system

Work on special projects and perform other related duties as assigned or requested

May oversee trainees or student opticians

Job Specifications

Typically has the following skills or abilities:

One to two years of experience in related field

Must have an active applicable State licensure

Certification by a nationally recognized optician association as an optician, if required by state law based on practice location

Working knowledge of MS Office package

Demonstrated ability to successfully perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

Effective verbal communication skills to prioritize multiple tasks and to be available for incoming calls and inquiries

Effective written communication skills to clearly document customer situations, as well as prepare letters to confirm agreements made

Excellent interpersonal and rapport-building skills

Ability to ask appropriate and relevant questions to identify patient needs

Proven problem-solving, negotiations, and decision-making skills

Ability to use appropriate discretion and judgment in applying patient/call handling guidelines

Ability to listen, process transactions, and interact with patients simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

Ability to provide enthusiastic and concise communication to meet and exceed patient expectations, as well as foster positive relationships with team members

Working Conditions

The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc.
