Bolton & Menk has an exciting opportunity for a Transportation Planner to join our team in our Charlotte or Raleigh location. We are looking for candidates who enjoy project collaboration with teammates, working at a fast pace, and are interested in the development of client-facing materials, analysis and summary of data, and technical writing. The ideal candidate possesses technical experience with at least one of these key software programs is a requirement: ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, MicroStation, and/or SketchUp. Above all, our team seeks highly self-motivated and curious colleagues, with a friendly, outgoing demeanor, and able to multitask, ask questions to continually improve and learn from feedback.

What You Will Be Doing:

In this transportation planning role, you will be part of a fast-paced environment, supporting or leading project teams/tasks for services related to transportation planning, bicycle/pedestrian planning, securing competitive funding for projects, land use analysis and impacts, research, data analysis, public engagement, and environmental documents.

Depending on level of experience, this role is expected to have knowledge of or be highly experienced in the following:


  • Transportation planning methods and application at the local and regional level
  • Multimodal, active transportation and bicycle-pedestrian planning methods and design standards for application in urban and rural areas
  • Agency and stakeholder involvement strategies
  • Researching methods and statistical principles related to urban/rural growth and development
  • Effective technical report preparation and presentations
  • Ability to work well within a team atmosphere
  • Public engagement with transportation planning and engineering projects
  • Policy research and persuasive writing skills
  • Environmental review and documentation


What We Are Looking For:


  • Bachelor's Degree and/or Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Studies; Urban Planning; Geography; Public Administration or other applicable discipline from an accredited college
  • AICP certification is desired but not a requirement.
  • Possess a valid driver's license as travel to various facilities and job sites may be required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong research skills and open to feedback
  • Self-motivated and highly organized
  • Comprehensive approach to challenges and problem-solving
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, Word, Excel)
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite software such as Photoshop, InDesign, or Illustrator
  • Experience with AutoCAD, SketchUp or ArcGIS Desktop software preferred
