Description

The Unit Assembly Technician is responsible for assembling complex mechanical equipment to specification in a production environment where precision, alignment, and repeatability are critical. This role executes mechanical fit-up, fastening, alignment, and verification activities using work instructions, torque specifications, and mechanical drawings. The position requires strong measurement discipline, a quality-first mindset, and the ability to identify and escalate abnormal conditions early to protect safety, quality, delivery, and cost. The Unit Assembly Technician works within standard work expectations, supports continuous improvement, and partners closely with supervision, engineering, and quality to ensure stable builds and consistent execution.

Scope and Responsibilities:
Essential duties include, but are not limited to the following:
* Actively supports a safe and healthy work environment for self and others
* Assemble complex mechanical equipment and subassemblies in accordance with standard work, work instructions, and build specifications
* Perform accurate mechanical fit-up and alignment activities to ensure precision and repeatable assembly results
* Read and interpret mechanical drawings and specifications, including tolerances and critical-to-quality characteristics
* Install fasteners and components using required torque procedures, sequencing, and documented standards without shortcuts
* Apply adhesives, sealants, lubricants, and other process materials as required by work instructions and specifications
* Perform measurement and verification using precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, depth/height measurement) and indicators as required
* Validate alignment, runout, parallelism, and related checks when required, and record results per documentation requirements
* Identify abnormal conditions early including fit issues, interference, part damage, missing components, and specification conflicts, and stop and escalate appropriately
* Document issues clearly, support containment and rework activities, and participate in root cause and countermeasure efforts when needed
* Maintain 5S expectations, organized work area, and proper tool control to support efficient and safe execution
* Meet standard work and production expectations while maintaining quality and accuracy
* Support continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen safety, quality, delivery, and cost performance
* Responsibilities may be reassigned by the supervisor as business needs evolve

Education/Certification:
* High School diploma or equivalent required
* Technical certificate, apprenticeship, or equivalent mechanical training preferred
* Forklift / overhead crane certification preferred if applicable to the area, or ability to obtain

Skills:
* Proven mechanical assembly experience with complex equipment where precision, alignment, and repeatability matter (examples: bearings/shafts, linear motion systems, ball screws, spindles, gearboxes, machine assemblies)
* Ability to interpret mechanical drawings and specifications, including tolerances and critical-to-quality characteristics (basic GD&T understanding preferred)
* Proficient with precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, depth/height measurement); dial indicator experience strongly preferred for verifying alignment, runout, parallelism, and related checks
* Demonstrated discipline with torque procedures and sequencing, adhesives/sealants as required, and accurate completion of build documentation
* Strong troubleshooting mindset with ability to recognize defects and abnormal conditions early, stop and escalate appropriately, and document issues clearly
* Ability to work within standard work expectations, maintain an organized workstation (5S), and support continuous improvement
* Strong reliability, accountability, and ability to work effectively in a team-based environment
* Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds on a regular basis (adjust if your standard differs)
