| Primary Purpose |
The College of Arts & Sciences (
CAS) at Appalachian State University invites applicants for a full-time (twelve-month) Assistant Director position for the Hickory campus. The Assistant Director of the College Advising and Support Services Hub (
CASSH) supports the
CAS mission and goals by assisting the office in providing services to the administration, faculty, staff, and students, primarily at the Hickory location. |
| Minimum Qualifications |
- Master's degree from an accredited institution.
- High level of computer proficiency, including Google Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, online conferencing.
- Ability to quickly learn technical advising tools including, but not limited to, Banner, DegreeWorks, DocuWare, Self-Service, Dashboard, and E-Print.
- Evidence of excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong organizational ability and attention to detail and accuracy.
- Possesses excellent interpersonal skills and works well in a team environment requiring both ability to take initiative and work independently and collaboratively.
- Strong desire to work with a college-age student population and commitment to student success.
- Exhibits commitment to execute all responsibilities with quality and excellence.
- Exhibits high level of ethics, integrity, and professionalism in all dealings.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- Master's degree from an accredited institution in academic advising, student development, counseling, education, or related field.
- Student services-related work experience in a Higher Education setting.
- Proficiency with SCT Banner Student System and DegreeWorks degree auditing system
- Experience with computerized registration.
- Experience interpreting and administering academic policies with a clear understanding of how these policies affect the student population as a whole as well as the individual student.

| Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
The Assistant Director,
CAS
CASSH, Hickory is part of a team responsible for providing a variety of services to undergraduate
CAS students primarily for the Hickory campus, with occasional assistance in Boone. The College of Arts & Sciences includes 17 academic departments, two centers, and one residential college. The College has approximately 6,700 students in 93-degree programs. This position will be primarily in-person at the Hickory, NC campus with limited remote flexibility, depending on operational needs. Occasional travel to the Boone, NC campus will be required for training and events.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting undergraduate students develop appropriate and realistic academic plans.
- Assisting students with course selection and obtaining or granting special permissions for course enrollment when needed.
- Assisting in records processing and degree auditing.
- Monitoring academic progress and assisting students in academic difficulty with strategies for achieving academic success.
- Developing and executing strategies that disseminate information about academic programs and policies to new, readmitting and continuing students. Making appropriate referrals to campus resources as needed.
- Providing guidance to faculty and staff on student issues and advising policies.
- Assisting with the daily operations of CAS academic advising needs in Hickory.
- Providing training and supervision of academic advisors and faculty advisors as needed.
- Participating in recruitment/orientation events at the Hickory campus including open house,new student orientation and other activities for the College.
- Collaborating with the Director in writing and maintaining procedure manuals.
- Assisting CAS Associate Deans with course planning and course seats management needs for the Hickory campus.
