The role of the Junior Servant Leader Intern is for high school age students to work alongside college-age young adult in providing school-age scholars grades K-8 in a culturally relevant and educational summer learning experience. Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools Servant Leader Interns (SLIs) serve as teachers to a maximum of 10 scholars, while Junior Servant Leader Interns (JSLIs) help co-create an environment in which scholars are engaged in learning that is enriching and relevant to each of their unique cultural identities. Junior Servant Leader Interns have access to further leadership development and networking opportunities geared toward continued direct service and advocacy on behalf of children and families.

Position Requirements:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.



  • A mature and professional demeanor that consistently displays positive behavior and attitudes.



  • Strong appreciation and understanding of individual cultural history and the willingness to be open and respectful of other cultures.



  • Strong communication skills, written and oral.



  • Serve as a positive role model for all scholars.



  • Maintain safety of scholars.



  • Maintain a professional decorum.



  • Assist team with set up, manage and break down classroom space according to standards outlined by CDF and the sponsor organization.



  • Attend all required trainings.



  • Work with site staff to ensure that all program components are implemented with fidelity.



  • Report any issues or concerns regarding program operation to the Site Coordinator.
