What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a highly motivated and team-oriented R&D Mechanical Engineer to join our Group. The Gas Transfer Systems (GTS) Group researches, designs, develops, and builds components which store hydrogen isotopes (deuterium and tritium) for extended periods of time, and then delivers precise quantities of gas.

As a GTS Mechanical Engineer, you will be part of a high performing team that applies systematic scientific approaches to evaluate emerging technologies applicability, performs mechanical component design, develops production ready drawings and processes, and develops and executes test plans to evaluate a components design, performance, and life.

Different skillsets will be required to identify viable solutions including fundamental mechanical engineering, basic statistical techniques, and excellent communication and teaming skills.

Non-technical activities will include development of project plans, estimating costs and schedules, and reporting results to customers. You will initially serve as a team member to solve complex problems. As you mature in this role, you may progress to more difficult challenges that will draw on skillsets across the laboratory to build teams to solve multi-disciplinary problems.

The position requires an ability to travel up to 25% to support the mission.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time at the Livermore, CA facility.

About Our Team

The Gas Transfer System (GTS) Engineering Department is a group of engineers, material scientists, and technologists who are responsible for the design, development, and qualification of gas transfer systems for national security programs. Our work has three major components: scientific research, advanced component development, and engineering support of existing systems. Responsibilities include high-pressure gas reservoir design, explosive component design, development of welding technologies, and investigating the effect of hydrogen isotopes in various materials. The department operates a high pressure testing facility and a welding/brazing facility. Our personnel routinely interact with other Sandia engineering and research groups, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, production agencies (located in Kansas City, Savannah River, and Texas), the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA), and the Department of Defense (DOD).

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
