Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Associate Director of Student Leadership & Engagement position. The Associate Director of Student Leadership & Engagement is a full-time, year-round position. The expected range for this position is $68,000-75,000 per year.

The salary offered will vary based on a number of factors, including but not limited to relevant education, training, and experience, tenure status, and other nondiscriminatory business considerations. Reporting to the Director of Student Engagement and Leadership, the Associate Director of Student Engagement and Leadership participates in creating and implementing campus programming and events aimed at creating an engaged and diverse campus life for Amherst College students. The Associate Director of Student Engagement and Leadership is responsible for the operations of the Powerhouse, Ford Hall and other Student Affairs spaces; and directs resources to support the development of Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and student leaders. Supervises a variety of Student Engagement and Leadership student staff who advance the mission of the office.

The Associate Director must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to attend events sponsored by Student Affairs, Student Engagement and Leadership and Amherst College student groups. This role is an in-person position and requires flexibility to work nights and weekends as needed.

The Associate Director of Student Engagement and Leadership communicates and interacts with both internal and external constituents. Internal communication includes advisement and dissemination of important policies and procedures regarding the event planning process, in addition to serving as a liaison between student event hosts and essential campus partners, including but not limited to Amherst College Police Department, Facilities, and Conference and Special Events, Environmental Health and Safety, among others. Reviews, negotiates, and executes contracts with outside vendors.

On-campus housing is a position requirement, and a semi-furnished apartment is provided, allowing for support of night and weekend responsibilities. In the event of campus-wide emergency and/or crisis, live-in staff are considered essential personnel and will be needed to remain on campus and ready to assist.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Registered Student Organization Oversight & Advising:

  • Provide direction and administrative oversight for Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), including the recognition, renewal, and event approval processes.

  • Advise and support student leaders and organization advisors in areas of governance, event planning, budgeting, and organizational development.

  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies, fiscal procedures, and risk management practices

  • Promote safety, inclusivity, and adherence to institutional guidelines

  • Advise student leaders and organization advisors on group management, goal setting, budgeting, and event planning.

    Facility Management:

  • Serves as the primary administrator of the Space Management Systems on behalf of Student Affairs. Assist in the management of Student Affairs spaces, working closely with Amherst College Facilities and Information Technology. Responsibilities include submitting work orders, ensuring spaces are maintained and clean, and addressing tech needs to ensure users have the necessary resources.

  • Provides operational and programmatic support for both large and small-scale events at the Student Engagement event spaces by leading trainings and creating guides on the usage of spaces.

  • Assist with maintaining the reservation system via the space management system (EMS) for the Student Engagement Spaces with support from casual staff.

    Event and Program Development:

  • Help to support signature leadership programs such as Mammoth Leadership Academy (MLA), Orientation, Mammoth Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Campus Parties, Homecoming, Spring concert, Commencement, and other large-scale events.

  • Coordinates marketing, advertising materials, and social media for Student Engagement and Leadership-sponsored events/programs.

  • Builds partnerships and collaborations across departments to provide campus-wide programs and events designed to build community and foster student engagement on campus sponsored by Student Engagement and Leadership.

  • Manages logistics for large-scale traditional event logistics with RSOs, including large Powerhouse events, dance showcases, and Hallmark events

  • Provides guidance and mentorship for student leaders and Registered Student Organizations.

  • Maintains and oversees student group usage of spaces, working closely with the scheduling system and platforms.

    Student Staff Supervision:

  • Recruit, train, and supervise Student Engagement and Leadership student workers.

  • Responsible for the training and support of Student Engagement and Leadership student workers to assist in support needs in Powerhouse and Ford Hall event venues, and the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership

  • Support student initiatives, including those connected to the Mammoth Mascot program.

    Administrative & Assessment Duties:

  • Maintain accurate records of all student organizations and events.

  • Manage budgets and funding allocations for student organizations.

  • Assess program effectiveness and student learning outcomes; prepare reports for department leadership.

  • Contribute to the overall goals of the Student Engagement and Leadership and Student Affairs through committee work and special projects.

    Qualifications

    Required
    • Master's degree
    • 2-5 years of experience in student affairs/activities
    • Experience in student-staff training, program development, and program creation
    • Strong supervision and programming experience
    • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Google programs and the ability to learn new software programs
    • Robust understanding of academic priorities, the educational mission of institutions, and ways in which student activities, programs and functions can promote student engagement, advance student learning, and contribute to achieving desired learning goals
    • Strong time-management, organizational, verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to be resourceful and solve problems creatively
    • Experience in managing event and program budgets

    Preferred
    • Knowledge of principles and practices of student activities programs and services at comparable colleges and universities.
    • Working knowledge of Virtual EMS and Anthology Engage platform.
