Job Summary: Seasonal Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment by actively supervising patrons in and around the water. The objective is to prevent drownings, accidents, and injuries through continuous surveillance, enforcement of safety policies, effective critical thinking and decision-making, and prompt response to emergencies. This position exists to protect public safety while supporting operations and programming.



Essential Responsibilities:



  • Supervise, actively guard, and scan the swimming and surrounding areas to prevent drownings and injuries. Enforce policies, and recognize and respond to rescues and emergency situations. Administer first aid and emergency medical care. Maintain good mental and physical fitness.
  • Participate in continuous training in lifesaving techniques, emergency medical response, and CPR. Attend and successfully complete emergency procedures and in-service training, physical fitness activities, orientations, and other required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with coworkers. Provide a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for all patrons. Enforce pool rules in a professional, respectful, and approachable manner.
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain pool facilities and rescue equipment. Ensure pools are safe, clean, and operational for staff and the public.
  • Complete required documents, including first aid, rescue, emergency, incident, and accident reports. Accurately record water chemistry tests and pool operation data.
  • Safely and properly operate chemical controllers, pool filtration systems, pool vacuums, pressure washers, water test kits, hand tools, garden tools, and more. Assist with maintaining proper water chemistry, including conducting filter backwashes and monitoring chemical feeders.
  • Teach water exercise classes, instruct swim lessons, and assist with lifeguard training programs as assigned.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.



Minimum Requirements:



  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • At least 16 years old at the time of application.
  • Able to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Proficient swimmer and comfortable in all types of water conditions.
  • Able to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activates to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety.
  • Willing and able to obtain Emergency Medical Responder Certification within one (1) month of start date.
  • Willing and able to obtain Milwaukee County Lifeguard Certification prior to start date.
  • Willing and able to obtain American Heart Association BLS, CPR, and AED Certification within one (1) month of start date.
  • Willing and able to pass all in-service testing.



Candidates will be evaluated and graded through the Physical Performance examination, which will consist of the following skills taught in the In-water training class. Sign up HERE for the In-water training class.



  • 100 Meter swim - freestyle, completed in less than 1 minute, 45 seconds.
  • Surface dive and retrieval of a submerged object.
  • Front approach cross-chest carry.
  • Rear approach cross-chest carry.
  • Front approach head-hold and release to a cross-chest carry.
  • Rear approach head-hold and release to a cross-chest carry.
  • Double wrist grip and release to a cross-chest carry.



NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the United States. Appointee must establish residency in the state of Wisconsin within six months of start date and maintain such residency during incumbency. In accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.

Hourly Pay Range: 14.17 - $21.25
