Overview

The Building Mechanic supports the operation and maintenance of company facilities, performing multi trade work across electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and general building systems. The ideal candidate has at least three years of building trades experience, can interpret engineering drawings and schematics, and brings strong mechanical aptitude. This role is part of a defined career path, and the selected candidate will be required to qualify for and advance through training leading to Mechanic A.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Perform general building maintenance, including routine repairs and preventative work.
  • Operate and maintain minor hand and power tools.
  • Perform basic lighting, wiring, and electrical tasks.
  • Complete basic plumbing, pipefitting, and carpentry tasks.
  • Conduct basic troubleshooting on HVAC systems.
  • Interpret and work from drawings, blueprints, maps, and schematics.
  • Use computer systems and applications (e.g., Maximo) to access, enter, and track work orders and time reporting.
  • Perform snow and ice removal using manual and powered equipment and maintain that equipment.
  • Support maintenance tasks across various facility types, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Execute work safely, efficiently, and in alignment with the companys operational excellence standards.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED

Relevant Work Experience

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in building trades, including the ability to read schematics and engineering drawings.
  • 3 to 5 years of electrical & Mechanical experience.
  • Experience using electronic work management platforms such as Maximo for time entry and updates to work orders is preferred.
  • Experience with rotating equipment and mechanical repair is preferred.
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain required certifications and licenses.

  • Driver's License Required
  • Other: S-12 Citywide Sprinkler Certificate of Fitness within 180 Days is preferred
  • Other: F-01 Citywide Fireguard for Impairment within 180 Days is preferred
  • Other: S-95 Citywide Supervision of Fire Alarm within 180 Days is preferred
  • Other: C-92 Supervision of Flammable Combustible Liquids within 180 Days is preferred
  • Other: EPA Universal Technical Certificate within 1 Year Preferred
  • Other: A-35 Citywide Supervision of Air Compressors within 180 Days is preferred
  • Other: S-13 Citywide Standpipe Certificate of Fitness within 180 Days is preferred
  • Other: F-03 Indoor Place of Assembly Safety Personnel within 180 Days is preferred

Physical Demands

  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
  • Unload materials from delivery vehicles and deliver equipment and materials to various operating facilities
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment

Additional Physical Demands

  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
