Controls Engineer

Overview

The Controls Engineer position provides expertise in industrial manufacturing and process controls to support the production of energetic materials and packaged explosives. This role will focus on the design, programming, and optimization of advanced process control systems, ensuring safety, efficiency, and reliability for new projects at our satellite manufacturing plants and new projects. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with DCS/PLC systems, industrial automation, and process control design.

Key Responsibilities and Duties



  • Ability to uphold the company's mission, vision, and values. Promote safety awareness in both work practices and company culture.
  • Meet with, interface with, and coordinate designs with the various stakeholders during development phases from concept development through construction.
  • Responsible for the electrical and control aspects of new capital and improvement projects including hardware design, programming, design documentation, networking, data acquisition, equipment installation, equipment debug, and support.
  • Design and review P&IDs, process descriptions, and automation documentation.
  • Design and program DCS/PLC control systems and implement system configurations.
  • Define and coordinate the physical installation of instruments, control valves, and I/O cabinets.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and related controls.
  • Maintain and develop plant electrical loads analysis, Arc Flash requirements and One-Line drawings.
  • Preparation of specifications, technical documentation, operating and maintenance procedures.
  • Coordinates with operations to ensure correct equipment installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Perform PID loop tuning using manual or software-based methods.
  • Assist with the procurement of equipment, materials, and services and the selection and hiring of subcontractors.
  • Supply project leaders with capital cost estimates and project timelines for completion of electrical and control work.

Education and Experience



  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in Electrical/Controls Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Computer Science, with at least five years of related experience.
  • Experience in chemical manufacturing, food and beverage manufacturing, or other relevant industries.
  • Proficiency with DCS/PLC systems, motor control, and variable frequency drives.
  • Experience with communication protocols: Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Modbus TCP/IP, Fieldbus, DeviceNet.
  • Proficiency in multiple IEC 61131-3 programming languages such as LD, ST, and FBD
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley controls - Logix/Studio and FactoryTalk View ME/SE
  • Working knowledge of the UL, NEC, CEC, NFPA, Hazardous Rating, and other technical codes.
  • Working knowledge of PSM (process safety management) processes and systems is desired but not required.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office and control software tools.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar software is a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, work independently, and meet deadlines.


Work Environment and Physical Demands



  • This position supports Austin Powder Company locations in the United States and Canada.
  • Work is both in a remote office setting and out in the field.
  • United States or Canada (Remote)
  • Willingness and ability to travel to company locations in the United States and Canada on a scheduled and unscheduled basis, approximately 30%
