The General Dynamics Land Systems 2025 Summer Internship Program provides an opportunity for students looking to start or continue the transition from academia into industry. Our three-month internship assignments provide compensation based on area of study and class standing, and have the students embedded in key functional areas of our business, getting real-world experience and mentorship from seasoned professionals.


This position is for a Design Development Engineering (DDE) Internship which includes working with a team of other design and development engineers and technical staff and participating in Engineering activities at the General Dynamics Land Systems headquarters in Sterling Heights, MI. This includes compoenent and module design, development and early conceptual work, from initial criteria through specification / bid package, development of funding documents, vendor bidding process, technical evaluation, testing and project implementation, through final acceptance. This role includes the development of articles in PLM, coordinating with suppliers and the overseeing and maintaining of design release documentation.

Responsibilities to Anticipate/Expect:
  • Powerpack and Power Hardware Engineering activity:
  • Responsible for coordinating with suppliers, internal customers and GDLS counterparts to ensure design and engineering efforts are being successfully planned, executed and accomplished on time.
  • Develop and monitor program and IRAD project schedules, requirements, progress, and delivery dates for all assigned activities.
  • Securing approval for capital spend and delivering capital projects with facilities and third party service providers.
  • Develop delivery plans in conjunction with IPT and corporate leadership needs.
  • Manage work scope to ensure tasks are successfully accomplished. T
  • Prepare weekly / monthly progress reports, to include presentations to management of project / programs status, successes and issues.
  • Maintain daily contact with management and GDLS counterparts to address routine challenges to the work scope
  • Responsible for creating reports and presentations in a professional format which can be presented to internal customers. This includes developing a scope of work, assigning scope to GDLS counterparts and compiling inputs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications Sought
  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree from an accredited 4-year university or college in Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical/Mechatronics/Controls or similar)
  • Attained at least a sophomore status based on university/college's class standing requirements at the start of the internship
  • Preferred - GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be a U.S. Person (i.e., a lawful permanent resident of the U.S.)
  • Must successfully pass standard pre-employment screens and must provide an official college or university transcript from their school before their first day of employment.
  • Must be able to complete a minimum of a full-time, 3-month assignment.

Additional Information / Desired Experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required to effectively interface with others.
  • Willingness to listen and learn with good organizational skills.
  • Ability to excel in a team-based environment as well as ability to work alone in a self-motivated environment.
  • Ability to utilize CAD applications (AutoCAD, Microstation, etc.) to develop and maintain 2D building layouts.
  • Must be able to effectively work in MS Excel, MS Word, MS Project and MS PowerPoint to develop professional work products and the ability to setup and host meetings in MS Outlook and MS Teams.
