*At the option of the hiring official, this position could be filled within an Apprentice to Journeyman Mechanic level based on knowledge, experience, skills, and behaviors required.

SUMMARY - Under the general supervision of the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor, the Mechanic performs general repair and preventive maintenance of all power plant equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Performs required troubleshooting and preventive and repair maintenance on plant equipment including turbines, air compressors, pumps, gear reducers, fans and all other plant equipment. Completes work orders in a timely manner as assigned. Assists supervisor with contract coordination. Informs supervisor of needed spare parts and tools to complete job assignments. Performs required alignment of drive couplings, belts, turbines, and other rotating equipment to design specifications. Performs required piping and valve repair to standards and specifications. Lubricates plant equipment according to manufacturer's guidelines. Clears plant equipment according to safe clearance procedures. Operates various power tools, hand tools, and equipment such as backhoes, loaders, and cranes. Leads small teams of maintenance workers on group assignments. Completes written or on-the-job training as required and provides assistance and training to others. Uses a computer to enter and retrieve information in the PeopleSoft or maintenance management system. Performs machining and fitting operations, makes necessary calculations, and uses correct material to ensure satisfactory repair and operation of equipment when required. Sets up and operates machine tools such as a lathe, shaper, and drill press to produce or repair parts necessary for plant maintenance when required.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors required.

Education and Experience - Mechanic: Requires five years of progressive related experience in mechanical maintenance in a power plant or industrial environment, or completion of a recognized apprentice program in power plant mechanical maintenance. Related education may be substituted for experience at a rate of one year of education for two years of experience.

Education and Experience - Apprentice: Entry level requires two years of industrial or utility experience in mechanical maintenance. One year of directly related experience is required for each step above the entry level. Related education may be substituted for experience at a rate of one year of education for two years of experience. Previous experience in cutting and welding is desired.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read Flow Diagrams and Blueprint Drawings. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively other employees.

Math Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: Ability to use a personal computer to access the intranet, PeopleSoft, Microsoft Office, and other software as required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Requires a current driver's license.

WORK SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: May require overtime on short notice and call out from home to support maintenance activities. May also require travel on short notice.
