What to Expect

The Permitting Program Manager serves as the primary liaison between Tesla and assigned AHJs & municipalities, driving operational efficiency, process improvement, and policy alignment to accelerate clean energy deployment. This role leverages data analysis to identify trends, forecast regional performance, and streamline permitting processes through automation and standardization. The Permitting Program Manager educates engineers on Tesla Energy products, facilitates regular meetings with internal teams and industry partners-including Product, Policy, and Permitting divisions-to address technical questions, support market expansion, and reduce cycle times. Additionally, the role involves interpreting complex building and electrical regulations, hosting team roundtables, training staff, and helping shape Tesla's participation in emerging markets and municipal programs.


What You'll Do
  • Conduct weekly and monthly reporting on regional trends, forecasts, and process improvements; provide proactive analysis on assigned AHJs to drive efficiency and support automation and standardization
  • Lead regular permitting meetings and monthly calls to address trends, correction issues, and process improvements, fostering strong relationships and alignment with AHJ partners
  • Educate plan reviewers and AHJ staff on Tesla Energy products, such as Powerwall variants and Backup Switch, and explain how these technologies operate
  • Collaborate with Tesla's Product and Policy teams to answer technical questions and drive initiatives that streamline permitting processes and reduce cycle time
  • Host bi-weekly roundtables for permitting team management and regional permitting teams within Tesla; consult on permit-specific process guides and support internal training
  • Communicate new permit requirements to internal stakeholders and ensure smooth integration into Tesla's operational processes
  • Research new markets and state programs; support business case development for Tesla's market expansion efforts in collaboration with policy and research analysts

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, Public Policy, or equivalent experience
  • Solid understanding of renewable energy operations, processes, and energy products such as battery storage and backup systems. Experience working directly with AHJs or building officials is a strong plus
  • Comfortable interpreting technical requirements, building, electrical, and engineering standards. Capable of collaborating with policy teams to advocate for regulatory improvements
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities across cross-functional teams. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with experience leading meetings and facilitating stakeholder discussions
  • Demonstrated track record of driving operational efficiency through process standardization and automation. Able to effectively introduce and implement new permitting processes within internal systems
  • Self-starter who thrives in fast-paced, ambiguous environments. Able to travel occasionally to regional offices and AHJ locations and quickly adapt to evolving business needs
  • Ability to analyze complex data sets, identify trends, and translate insights into process improvements and actionable reporting. Proficiency with Excel and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau) is preferred
