APP Fellows rotate throughout every ICU environment within UVA Medical Center, revisiting most more than once. Fellows will also rotate with experts in specialty services such as thoracic and abdominal transplant, infectious disease, procedural experiences, as well as elective rotations to explore new areas of medicine or to simply revisit a previous rotation experience. Fellows are required to take a patient load under the guidance and supervision of a designated preceptor, increasing their patient load and level of responsibility throughout the program as determined by their competency and overall clinical development.
Full-time Clinical Schedule: APP Fellows will work a full clinical schedule aligned with designated preceptors within each rotation, in addition to attending a dedicated didactic day every Friday. Weekly Hours: Fellows average 40-60 hours per week, including preparation, reading, and Professional Development Curriculum requirements. Critical Care Fellows: May occasionally work nights, weekends, and holidays as part of their clinical requirements. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen. Administration: Fellows receive dedicated, protected non-clinical time throughout the program to complete required didactic coursework, scholarly projects, quality-improvement initiatives, and professional development activities. Professional: Professional Development/Education: Clinical Didactic Curriculum: The clinical didactic curriculum provides specialty-specific experiences including lectures, simulations, case studies, and workshops designed to meet each track's learning needs. Didactic sessions vary weekly and are documented within the fellow's master schedule to ensure comprehensive exposure to advanced clinical education.
Professional Development Curriculum: Fellows engage in leadership, research, publication, and quality improvement initiatives that expand their impact beyond patient care. This curriculum balances clinical duties with professional development opportunities and dedicated workshops, preparing APPs as future leaders and innovators in healthcare. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Master's Degree as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) Experience: Less than 1 year of experience in desired specialty. Licensure: Varies by specialty - see below. Neurosciences: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Physician Assistant or Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, or Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner) as set forth by the state of Virginia. Critical Care: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Physician Assistant or Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner) as set forth by the state of Virginia. Primary Care: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Physician Assistant or Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner or Adult Primary Care Registered Nurse Practitioner) as set forth by the state of Virginia. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of the UVA Medical Center, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and the appropriate certifying bodies. Must be enrolled with all payers through Delegated Credentialing and can participate in Medicaid and Medicare for billing. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association required. For Critical Care only, current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through American Heart Association required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs.
