Position Summary

The Staff Nurse II is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse II provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Staff Nurse II functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals. Staff Nurse II facilitates educational development of staff, leads unit-based quality improvement initiatives, and acts as a professional and clinical role model and educational resource for staff. Staff Nurse II is actively engaged in Shared Leadership through membership on a governing council.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Clinical and other related duties as assign.

  • Develops, implements, and updates the patient's plan of care based on on-going assessment of the patient and input from the patient's family.

  • Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care.

  • Verifies and implements orders from physician, physician assistant and/or advance practice nurse by performing interventions as prescribed by the provider and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.

  • Engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.

  • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to patient's changing needs.

  • Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback.

  • Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.

  • Assumes role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools.

  • Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies.

  • Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs.

  • Identifies recurring clinical practice and/or related unit problems and participates in problem solving and resolution.

  • Plans, presents, and evaluates learning/educational experiences for staff and students.

  • Serves as preceptor and/or resource to other nursing, support staff and students.

  • In collaboration with Director/CNCII leads unit-based quality initiatives and provides feedback and education to staff.

  • Assign codes for ancillary, hospital services, and medical providers using standardized coding system such as ICD-10, HCPCS and/or CPT, or verifies coding performed by clinical staff for accuracy; uses codes in referral processing for outpatient visits and procedures.

  • Manages multi-step patient cases in an electronic health record (EHR) system which could include monitoring outstanding tasks, investigating insurance issues, and/or canceling or rescheduling services.

  • Investigates and resolves insurance denials which could include responding to documentation requests, communicating with patients/providers to resolved insurance issues and other patient related concerns.

  • Processes and coordinates provider orders; collaborates with physicians, providers, and/or patients to ensure all necessary information is gathered to support insurance processing.

  • Effectively communicates when answering incoming calls and placing outgoing phone inquiries related to patient concerns, insurance information, and procedure scheduling. Provides excellent customer services to patients, providers, and clinic staff in person and via telephone.

  • Review daily charges via epic electronic health record (EHR) system and performs end of day charge reconciliation when necessary.

  • Provide analytical support of financial authorization and complies statistical data for reporting purposes.

  • Maintain applicable assigned work queues and expected lead times.

  • When necessary, contact patients to obtain demographic, insurance & eligibility information, complete registration, Inform patients of cancellations, and rescheduling options.

  • Continue to provide education on payers and payer requirements and UI Health contracts. Distributes updated information regarding changes in insurance coding, contracts, guidelines, policies requirements, etc. to impacted stakeholders. Complete self-pay estimates, as necessary.

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    2. One year of nursing experience comparable to that gained as a Staff Nurse I.
    • Nationally certified through ANCC approved certifier or within 6 months of hire in an area relevant to their clinical area.
    • BSN (or higher) required of an accredited nursing program.
    • Current BLS/CPR and/or other required unit specific certifications.
    • Current ACLS Advanced cardiac life support, or within 6 months of hire for main hospital.
    • Minimum 5 years of GI nursing experience.
    • Minimum 3 years of GI therapeutic endoscopy procedures (Manometry, Endoflips, ESM, ERCP, EUS, ESD, Poem)
    • Clinical knowledge and understanding of endoscopy procedures.
    • Previous oversight of supply management and utilization.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Master Degree in Healthcare Related (Preferred)
    PALS (preferred)
    Minimum of 10 years of healthcare experience
    Prior Epic experience preferred.
    Previous prior authorization experience
    Previous billing and coding experience
