THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is actively seeking a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee to join the Armstrong County Maintenance Organization. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of a variety of vehicles, including cars, trucks, and heavy machinery. Your duties will encompass gaining expertise in servicing equipment such as street sweepers, concrete mixers, and front-end loaders. You will identify necessary repairs and assist in replacing critical components like shock absorbers, transmissions, and brake systems. Additionally, your tasks will involve wheel balancing and alignment, executing minor body repairs, and testing or replacing alternators and other electrical components. A significant part of your job will focus on preventative maintenance, which includes performing automotive diagnostics, tune-ups, and tire changes. You will also work on repairing and adjusting essential systems, including cooling, suspension, electrical, heating, and air conditioning, while ensuring the proper maintenance of fuel injection, brake, steering, and transmission systems. When necessary, you will take part in official state inspections for safety and emissions compliance, which involves performing required repairs, conducting road tests, and completing the necessary inspection documentation to ensure that all vehicles adhere to regulatory standards.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $47,844.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field; or
  • Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires employees to possess an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed on the first day of employment.
  • Certain positions will require employees to possess an active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver's License with Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • All positions will require employees to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
  • This position will require employees to pass the Department of Transportation's New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
