DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The Vector Management intern plays a crucial role in supporting Aquatic Biologists with the taxonomic identification of mosquitoes and black flies, which are vital components of the West Nile Virus Control and Black Fly Suppression Programs. These insects are significant pests and serve as disease vectors for both humans and various species of domestic and wild animals. Accurate identification of mosquito and black fly species is essential for regional and county staff, as it informs their decisions regarding necessary control measures. In addition to identification tasks, interns may also participate in molecular testing of samples to detect the presence of arthropod-borne diseases, engage in vector control operations aimed at minimizing disease transmission risks, and assist in sorting stream macroinvertebrates to assess stream quality. This diverse range of activities not only contributes to public health efforts but also enriches the intern's learning experience in the field of aquatic biology and vector management.
