Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern in one of our Carolinas (Raleigh, Charlotte, Wilmington and Asheville, NC, or Greenville, SC) offices. The position offers the opportunity to apply academic knowledge to real-world environmental and infrastructure projects using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and related tools. Typical work involves spatial data management, map production, and analysis to support the development and management of GIS projects for a variety of technical practices including, contaminated site investigation, human health risk assessment, subsurface remediation, water resources, and geotechnical engineering. The position is full-time (40 hours/week) for approximately 13 to 15 weeks during the summer semester of 2026. Candidates are responsible for coordinating their own transportation to and from the office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Use Geographic Information Systems (GIS), primarily Esri ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, to produce, display, and analyze spatial data;
  • Create, organize, and maintain GIS datasets (e.g., feature classes, rasters, tables, web layers) to support reporting, analysis, and data visualization.
  • Prepare clear, publication-quality figures and map layouts for technical reports, presentations, and regulatory submittals using established templates and cartographic standards;
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of environmental data sets using desktop tools (e.g., Excel, MS Access) and environmental data management systems (such as EQuIS) including compiling, formatting, verifying, and exporting large diverse datasets for analysis and GIS use;
  • Assist with configuration and testing of mobile data collection and web GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS Survey123, Field Maps, and ArcGIS Online web maps) and associated Word/PDF report templates used for environmental field programs.
  • Drive personal, company, and rental vehicles to client or company project or office sites, and other business locations, as needed.


Education and Licensure

  • Currently registered in a Bachelor's or Master's university degree program in a relevant technical discipline (geography, geology, environmental science, engineering, or related field). (required)
  • At least 2-3 completed courses in GIS, cartography, or remote sensing


Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Familiarity with GIS and its associated software, analysis, reporting, cartography, data management, and visualization, preferably using ArcGIS Pro. (required)
  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS Pro (and preferably ArcGIS Online),including basic geodatabase structures and geoprocessing concepts. (preferred)
  • Knowledgeable with cartographic techniques and best practices. (required)
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills. (required)
  • Understanding of data quality control concepts. (required)
  • Solid general technical / analytical capabilities, including the ability to learn new software quickly. (required)
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, including working with tables, filters, basic formulas, and simple charts to visualize data. (preferred)
  • Familiarity with other mapping software (e.g., Google Earth, QGIS, PostGIS). (preferred)
  • Exposure to or interest in programming languages such as Python and VBA. (preferred)
  • Familiarity with environmental data and knowledge of basic statistics. (preferred)
  • Experience building or using mobile data collection tools (e.g., Survey123, Field Maps, EQuIS Collect) for environmental or infrastructure projects. (preferred)
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
