POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Superintendent supports the Commercial Roofing/Sheet Metal Superintendents in planning, organizing, and overseeing the daily activities of production crews. This role assists with ensuring roofing products and systems are installed with the highest degree of quality, safety, and efficiency. The Assistant Superintendent also provides operational and project support, including labor tracking, materials coordination, customer communication, and jobsite oversight. This position plays a key role in workforce development, field leadership, and representing the company professionally to customers and contractors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Leadership & Workforce Development
- Assist the Superintendent in providing leadership, guidance, and training to multiple commercial roofing crews.
- Educate employees on roofing best practices, materials, equipment, and safety procedures.
- Support recruiting, mentoring, and retaining a dependable and knowledgeable commercial workforce.
- Participate as an instructor in Company-sponsored training and workforce education programs.
- Promote strong work ethic and enforce company policies, procedures, and safety practices.
Project & Production Support
- Support daily jobsite operations to maximize production while maintaining job costs, installation quality, and safety.
- Assist with coordinating crew schedules, manpower adjustments, and resolving personnel or jobsite issues.
- Contribute to planning daily and weekly project workflows, sequencing, and material needs.
- Help oversee and direct efforts related to quality control and adherence to specifications.
- Communicate effectively with prime contractors, subcontractors, and customers on job progress and issues.
Materials, Equipment & Administrative Duties
- Ensure proper use of roofing materials, tools, and equipment on each job.
- Assist with purchasing, receiving, and distributing materials to job sites.
- Track and control labor and material costs for assigned projects.
- Review and help prepare project documentation including purchase orders, proposals, submittals, timecards, and field reports.
- Support project setup, billing communication, and closeout documentation as needed.
- Report issues that may negatively impact project timelines, budgets, or company well-being.
- Maintain and protect company equipment, vehicles, tools, and personnel policies.
Customer Relations & Communication
- Assist in addressing customer requests, questions, and concerns promptly.
- Support dispute resolution efforts in coordination with the Superintendent or Project Manager.
- Represent the company professionally at all times, promoting positive customer relations.
Starting pay ranges from $55k-70K+ per year based on experience and qualifications.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- 3-5 years of commercial roofing or related construction experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of commercial roofing systems, materials, and installation practices.
- Experience reading blueprints and understanding project specifications.
- Valid driver's license with clean driving record.
- Ability to travel occasionally and work extended hours when required.
- Must not be afraid of heights; ability to safely climb and access roofs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of commercial roofing systems across multiple product types.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to perform basic math including fractions, decimals, and measurements.
- Competence with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and basic tablet/mobile applications.
- Problem-solving ability in dynamic jobsite conditions; high sense of urgency.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize, and bring tasks to completion.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands, and communicate clearly. The employee must also be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and access roofs using ladders. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
