LOCATION OF (1) POSITION(S) TO BE FILLED: TENNESSEE STATE MUSEUM, TSM ADMINISTRATIVE OPERATIONS, DAVIDSON COUNTY

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and two years of experience in coordinating or managing operations relating to exhibition programs, gallery design, and artifact handling, or a related field.

Substitution of Experience for Education: Qualifying experience in exhibition work may substitute for the required education, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of four years.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Complete a background clearance application which includes releasing all records involving any criminal history and a valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

  • Ability to lift and move objects more than 50 pounds.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and other equipment for fabrication.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret design schematics and drawings.

Examination Method: Education and Experience, 100%, for Preferred Service positions.

Overview

Under direct supervision, the Exhibition Coordinator assists with the designing, preparing, coordinating, and facilitating the development and installation of all on-site and traveling exhibitions and related spaces. The Exhibitions Coordinator also assists with administrative and technical support of all exhibition projects. This position differs from the Assistant Chief Per Specialty as the latter has the full responsibility for the coordination of the exhibition according to institutional procedure.

Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for proposing the initial design concept and assist with the inter-department coordination through final design in accordance institutional procedure.
  2. Assist with the preparation, installation and deinstallation of all permanent and temporary exhibitions; monitoring installation sites for safety.
  3. Responsible for the regular monitoring and cleaning of permanent and temporary gallery spaces and the maintenance of exhibit spaces and casework.
  4. Handles the management of schedules, budgets, exhibition records, and other documentation related to each exhibition. Assists with the prioritizing and planning of exhibitions in order to meet stated deadlines.
  5. Assists with the rights and reproductions process for exhibitions projects, research copyright information, negotiates usage agreements and fees, and oversees compliance and credits; Maintains documentation of copyright procurements in coordination with Registration and Curatorial departments.
  6. Assists with the fabrication of casework, graphics, labels, and other material assets related to all exhibition projects utilizing both in-house employees and vendors. Builds relationships and serves as the point-of-contact within the Exhibitions Department for vendors. Maintains a database of vendors and institutional partners necessary for exhibitions projects.
  7. Assists with the coordination and maintenance of gallery lighting and exhibition technology in accordance with institutional standards. Assists with the inventory, storage, and transportation of exhibitions assets.
  8. May assist with the transportation of the museum collection. Operating forklifts, scissor lift, pallet jack, freight elevators, box truck and other department vehicles. Assist with delivering, loading, and unloading materials. Supervising and escorting vendors onsite.
  9. Responsible for adhering to museum standards set forth in the State Museum's Collections Management Policy and other state policies in performance of job duties.
